Employee testimonial: how the MOD's apprenticeship program has given this employee greater confidence at work

Hi, I’m Hannah and I work in the Assurance and Resourcing team within the Army Programmes Change Portfolio Office at Army HQ.

I joined the MOD in 2017 as part of the Fast-Track Project Delivery Apprenticeship where I studied for 3 years and undertook the Association of Project Management (APM) Project Management Qualification (PMQ).

When I applied for the apprenticeship, I had completed my A-Levels and been in full time work for 4 years whilst I tried to figure out what career path I wanted to take. I saw the advert for the apprenticeship online, and I can honestly say I had never considered an apprenticeship route, heard of Project Delivery, let alone knew what it meant! I was placed within Army HQ and over the past 5+ years, I have been lucky enough to work in several departments within a variety of roles, working alongside experienced Project Delivery professionals.

From working in Finance, a Programme Management Office, Planning and Scheduling team, Governance and Assurance and more recently, Resourcing, I feel that I now have a broad understanding of Defence and Project Delivery. Had it not been for the apprenticeship, I wouldn’t have gained all this brilliant experience and worked on some really fast paced and pivotal workstreams.

I have definitely grown in confidence, and I’ve found working alongside really senior Military and Civil Servants has been great and a real eye opener. I have been able to learn from their wealth of knowledge and everyone is always more than happy to spend the time to help and advice.

I have always felt invested in and supported by my Line Managers and colleagues whilst completing my apprenticeship. I was always given the time to work on my assignments and I knew I had a great support network.

I am now a qualified and committed Project Delivery professional, and I hope to stay in PD/MOD for the foreseeable future. I would really encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship, regardless of age, or a role in Project Delivery to go for it as it has been such an exciting few years and a great beginning to a strong career path.
