How support from the MOD allowed this working mother to continue her career

Hi, I am Joanne, I joined the MOD in 2003 following a short career in the Armed Forces. I am often asked by my friends why do you work for the Civil Service, and I say ‘why wouldn’t you?’

I began my time in the Civil Service as an HGV Driver delivering Stores equipment across the Northeast, Yorkshire and Humberside. I continued until 2004 when my son was born. Due to complications my work/life balance had to change. I needed support from my workplace, for them to understand my needs and to support me. Speaking to them was so easy and the support and understanding I received was so reassuring.

Over the years I have moved jobs within the Civil Service, and I have continued to receive the support I need. This support has helped me bring up my son and still be able to work full time. Whilst I have been in the Civil Service, I have successfully gained NVQs at Level 3 in Business Administration, Customer Services and IT. I became the Point of Contact for the NVQ programme at my site and it was a very successful programme.

This led to me being recognised at the NVQ Providers Annual Awards Ceremony. I have recently been awarded a Commendation Coin from my Commandant, this is a coin awarded to individuals that have gone above and beyond in their role. I thoroughly enjoy working for the Civil Service and hope to continue to work for them for many years to come. The opportunities within the Civil Service are endless.
