Tell us about your university studies and what you are responsible for at Skanska.

I’m currently on the HS2 project working as a site-based civil engineering apprentice. I’m responsible for mapping out reference markers on-site using surveying equipment, ensuring we meet quality standards during work, and producing and planning paperwork for upcoming works.

I am studying for a civil engineering degree apprenticeship at the University of East London.

Why did you choose the degree apprenticeship route?

I knew I didn’t just want to go to university, and I always looked for another option.

I thought it was great when I found the opportunity to study towards a degree and gain hands-on experience.

Throughout my journey, I have realised there is nothing better than getting this much experience on site and relating it to the university curriculum. I value what I learn, and I can always reach out to my colleagues for any guidance with my learning.

What A levels did you study and how has that helped you?

I studied A-level mathematics, physics, and economics. These subjects helped me develop a problem-solving mindset alongside good communication skills.

These skills transfer to the environment I’m now in and help me daily.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Skanska?

I love that no two days are the same. Every day brings a new challenge to be solved, and there is always something new to learn. Working for Skanska, I know there is respect for employees and a passion for career development.

What advice would you give someone thinking about applying for an apprenticeship role?

Anyone who is thinking of applying for an apprenticeship, I’d say do it! Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity to gain experience and learn about your industry whilst developing your career.
