Macmillan have been working with Argos since 2015 to ensure that more people than ever are able to access vital cancer support, by raising money to fund more Macmillan nurses. Argos has already raised an incredible £2 million to support people living with cancer. And they’re not stopping there.
Why we're working together
The need for Macmillan nurses has never been greater – by 2020, almost one in two people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. That’s why in 2015, after a staff vote, Argos chose Macmillan to be its charity partner. The partnership aims to raise £3 million by early 2018 – enough to fund 56 Macmillan nurses for one year.
How we're raising money
Argos stores, head office, distribution centres, and call centres have hosted a wide range of activities to boost the fundraising total. These include support of Macmillan events such as World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Support has also included individual staff challenges like a sponsored walk of 11 of London’s iconic bridges, Brave the Shave and running marathons in a Macmillan vest. More recently, over 400 staff, including Argos’ CEO John Rogers and the Executive team, took part in Macmillan’s Mighty Hikes series. They hiked a marathon for Macmillan with the ambition to raise £200,000 from this event alone.
Many colleagues who fundraise for us have received Macmillan’s support. One Argos Store Colleague said, 'I personally am very happy that Argos is partnered with such an amazing charity. Macmillan have been there when I needed them so I like to give back.'
Every year Argos launches their new ranges in-store with national collections for Macmillan, which have raised a fantastic £315,536 so far. Many volunteers (over 1,000 to date) lend their support to help out at these collections, many of whom go on to donate their time regularly for Macmillan.
Argos has also been using their man-power to support Macmillan through a range of volunteering activities. This has included skill sharing with Macmillan teams to develop our staff and processes, creating care packages for people living with cancer, and making calls to thank and support our World’s Biggest Coffee Morning hosts.
Helen Dudderidge, Customer Adviser in Argos Barry was a cheerpoint volunteer at the Cardiff Half Marathon in October. She said, ’I can't do the run but I decided that I can do something I can spare a bit of time to hand out drinks to the runners and my voice to cheer everyone on. I'm collecting for Macmillan as a Macmillan volunteer […] it's helping our charity out which I probably wouldn’t have done if it wasn't for Argos getting me involved with a great cause.'
