A Proud Journey in Defence: Kat’s Story in the MOD Guard Service (MGS)

My path into the MOD has been far from conventional, but one I’m very glad I’ve taken. Before joining the Civil Service, I held a range of roles, including working as a buyer for a large department store and managing an outdoor clothing and accessories shop. My experience shows that you don’t need a background in security to build a rewarding career at the MOD.

Beginning My Civil Service Career

I became a Civil Servant in 2021, marking my first significant career step after having my child and accompanying my husband on a three‑year posting to RAF Akrotiri. Returning to work felt like a big transition, but joining the Civil Service offered stability, support, and purpose.

Why I Chose the Civil Service

Living in a remote part of Scotland, I wanted to contribute to RAF Lossiemouth, my nearest military unit. That desire led me to several rewarding roles as an Air Civil Servant before moving into the MOD Guard Service (MGS) with the Army.

I began as an Administrative Assistant and, thanks to the encouragement of both military and civilian line managers, progressed through the grades. The opportunities for growth are limitless; there is truly no ceiling on what you can achieve in the Civil Service. The culture of support and development has allowed me to thrive.

What I Love Most About My Role

I enjoy the incredible variety that Civil Service roles offer. As an Operations Manager with the MGS, I was responsible for guarding one of the UK’s most valuable strategic assets, a role that carried real purpose and pride.

Now, as a Talent Acquisition Recruiter for the MGS, I bring my operational experience into a busy, diverse, and people‑focused role. I’ve also been able to continuously develop myself through webinars, speaking opportunities, additional responsibilities, and ongoing learning.

I am immensely proud to be a Civil Servant. Every role, no matter where it sits, supports defence in meaningful and impactful ways.

Advice for Anyone Considering a Career in the MOD

Don’t be intimidated. You may feel apprehensive about the environment you’ll be entering, but very quickly you will see the vital part you play in Defence. Every contribution matters, and you will find support every step of the way.
