Juneteenth and why it will always matter

Juneteenth and why it'll always matter. A reflection from our BUILD Network co-chairs.

Why is Juneteenth a particularly significant time to honour for you and your family?
“In Louisiana, where my mother's family is from, the Plantation land that my family lives on and tends to, is the same land where my ancestors were slaves on. Overtime slaves became known as sharecroppers.
Growing up, Juneteenth was a memorial of sorts for my family; recognising where we had been, where we were, and where we were going.
Now as an adult, I better understand that for my family it was a time of reflection.”

What impact do you think Juneteenth has on African American identity and culture?
“Juneteenth has given African Americans a safe space to celebrate "our Blackness" and "our Freedom" - two things that we are constantly questioned and challenged on.
Juneteenth gives us a space to have our feelings and experiences, as Black people, acknowledged and validated.
This has then allowed us to embrace ourselves and our culture more.”
