iCAN: A new network for inclusion in the Insurance Industry

London Skyline for iCAN article

The UK insurance industry has come together to create an independent, multicultural networking group called iCAN – the Insurance Cultural Awareness Network. The network aims to recognise and support the careers of BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) and International colleagues in the insurance industry.

iCAN aims to:

  • Bring the industry together to share best practice and ideas for pushing BAME inclusion, from apprenticeships to board levels.
  • Promote cultural awareness and drive engagement internally and externally
  • Challenge the perceptions and misconceptions of our industry and focus on the positives of building a career in the sector
  • Connect with BAME networks from other industries such as legal, banking and public sector

iCAN Launch event

iCAN will officially launch on 8th May, 2017 with an event at Lloyd’s of London. The event will comprise of a guest panel who will discuss the benefits and impact of investing in diversity initiatives and networks, and ask the question: does diversity pay?

Diversity over the last few years has been proven to be good for a business’ bottom line as a McKinsey report in 2015 stated that companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity were more likely to produce better returns than their peers.

The panel also intend to tackle further questions, such as:

  • Has any industry shown the commercial benefits of diversity?
  • With the huge increase in diversity and inclusion initiatives, are they having the intended impacts?
  • What is the true value of networks and employee resource groups, and how can the industry benefit from them?

Panellists include:

  • Huw Evans, Director General from the Association of British Insurers
  • Pauline Miller, Head of D&I from Lloyd’s of London
  • Vinay Kapoor, Head of D&I from BNP Paribas
  • Jonathan Ashong Lamptey, PhD in BAME Networks and Employment Relations and Organisational Behaviour at the London School of Economics
  • Moderator: Rose St. Louis, Head of Partnership Development at Zurich

The event will take place at 5.30pm (5.00pm registration) on 8th May, 2017 at Lloyd’s of London’s offices: One Lime Street, London EC3M 7HA
