Category: Race, Ethnicity & Heritage
This Black History Month, Great Western Railway (GWR) is proud to amplify the voices and celebrate the profound contributions of black individuals within the rail industry. As part of our ongoing commitment to Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), we're highlighting inspiring leaders like Mameri, whose dedication is forging a path towards a truly inclusive future for all.

Championing True Inclusion: Mameri's Journey
Mameri (Project Manager at GWR) has had a wonderful journey in the UK rail industry, a testament to the power of passion and purpose. With a decade of experience, she brings a deep-rooted drive to open doors for others, ensuring that the rail industry's journey toward true inclusion is not just aspirational, but actionable. Mameri is a true inclusivity champion, embracing diversity in race, ability, background, and opportunity.
Her leadership extends to playing pivotal roles in crucial networks such as Rail Unites for Inclusion, GWR’s FUTURE network, and the REACH network. These groups are vital in fostering environments where every individual feels valued and empowered to thrive.
Beyond Diversity - Intentional Inclusion at Every Level
Mameri firmly believes that diversity alone is not enough. For her, inclusion must be intentional, visible, and deeply embedded at every level of an organisation. She passionately advocates for greater representation in senior roles, emphasising the importance of merit-based advancement and cultivating a culture of openness.
"My journey has allowed me to bring both heart and purpose to the UK rail industry's journey toward true inclusion," Mameri shares. "I've been fortunate to play a leading role in networks that champion inclusivity across all spectrums."
While acknowledging the progress made, particularly the growing involvement of executive leaders who actively support equity and inclusion efforts, Mameri continues to push for more. Through her impactful work, Mameri is helping to shape a rail industry where inclusion isn't just a talking-point but a lived, felt, and expected reality for everyone.
Leading by Example – A Personal Reflection on Pride and Authenticity
Mameri’s commitment is deeply personal. As a mother, she embodies the values she champions, striving to be a role model for the next generation.
"Pride is standing strong in who I am, knowing I don't need to shrink to fit in," Mameri reflects. "It's seeing my daughter grow into a confident young woman who speaks up for herself – mirroring the courage and authenticity I try to live by every day."
This powerful sentiment underscores GWR's belief that a truly inclusive workplace fosters an environment where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work, contributing their unique perspectives and talents.
