Employee testimonial: My work in Finance is Anything but Uniform

Hi there. My name is Mike, and I am a civil servant working with the Army in the MOD and I work in Finance. At this point you’ve probably thought of switching off, because you might think that Finance is Boring? Yet Finance has its fingers in all the pies.

I have worked for MoD since I was 18, predominantly for the Army and in my career, I have worked at all kinds of establishments. I have seen many changes to both MoD and the Army since I first joined, and I have met a huge variety of people both in and out of uniform. I count myself fortunate for the variety of work I have been afforded and whilst I have worked mostly in Finance over the last 20 years my very first job was as an Industrial grade working with Heavy Armoured Vehicles. Those that know me know that I’m a bit of a Sci-Fi obsessive, but I am also a bit of a military vehicle enthusiast. So, whilst I’ve never been too interested in the number of wheel nuts on a Jackal, I like to think that knowing something about our equipment has helped me, in some ways, better understand and to better undertake my job.

As with many disciplines, Finance works best when done collaboratively; be it in the Equipment Plan space, the infrastructure space or just the normal operating activities. I believe that we in Finance are not only key enablers to the activity and ambition across the Army but also guardians, not just of the public purse but to our Budget Holders by providing them with the best possible advice to deliver their objectives.
