From University to the Army: My Journey on the Civil Service Fast Stream
Category: Gender (Equality & Identity), Training & Development
I first discovered the Fast Stream when I was exploring career options during my final year at university. I was drawn to the Civil Service because I wanted to make a meaningful difference. When I researched the Fast Stream, it seemed like a brilliant opportunity to start a career in the Civil Service – so I went for it!

The Fast Stream is a 3–4-year leadership development programme for the Civil Service that offers the opportunity to complete postings in multiple departments, working on diverse projects. The Fast Stream provides tailored training, mentoring and opportunities to enable you to develop your skills and grow professionally. If you successfully pass the end-of-scheme assessment, you’re supported in securing a Grade 7 position in the Civil Service.
What stood out to me most when I was researching the HR Fast Stream was the chance to try different elements of HR – including learning and development, reward, talent and change management – in different parts of the Civil Service to explore what I enjoy most. I loved that the HR scheme includes the opportunity to gain a Level 7 CIPD qualification, which is widely recognised and valued by the HR profession.
Whilst I didn’t get to choose my postings, I was very excited to be matched with the Army. I really valued the chance to work in a small, supportive team where I could contribute to varied HR priorities to support people who safeguard the UK’s security. I have really enjoyed this posting so far – it’s been rewarding, full of great experiences and I’ve had the opportunity to meet some great people!
I’ve really enjoyed getting involved in employee relations, exploring ways to enhance Army’s engagement with Trade Unions. Something interesting I’ve recently started is my CIPD research project on supporting the wellbeing of the civilian workforce – I’m excited to see where it leads.
If you’re considering the Fast Stream, I would recommend doing some research into the different schemes and speaking to people, both current and former Fast Streamers. If it sounds like it’s a good fit for you – go for it! There’s no ‘typical Fast Streamer.’ In my cohort, we have a wide range of professional backgrounds and everyone brings something unique.
My experience on the Fast Stream has been very positive and I’ve learned so much over the past two years - I would highly recommend it to others!
