Life as an Army Horse Groom

The way I see it, being an Army Groom gives you basically all the perks of being a horse owner, without any of the cost! It’s more like being paid to do your hobby full time. Of course… there are the essential tasks like mucking out and sweeping, but that’s what you expect when you’re looking after horses.

You’re also given all the equipment you need, including riding gear for yourself and for the horses, and if your items get worn out, they are easily replaced at no expense to yourself.

For me, the best part is handling, exercising, and riding the horses that you look after. You tend to be responsible for the same horses each day, so you are lucky enough to build relationships and bond with those horses. You will always find your favourites and those ones that have a little more personality! I get to ride and jump regularly, and I’ve really found my horsemanship is constantly improving as I work alongside talented and experienced colleagues. I love working as part of a likeminded team who are all as passionate about working with horses as I am.

I also feel like I have enough time and all the right equipment to care for the horses to a very high standard, which is really important to me. And working as a Civil Servant is almost the best part, as you know you have job security, a decent pension, a generous annual leave entitlement and that there are systems in place to support you regardless of what issues or problems you may be faced with.

I personally feel highly valued as an Army Groom, especially because I’m surrounded by people who are willing to help me build on the skills that I have and help me work towards skills I would like to develop. Honestly, I don’t think there many jobs available working with horses that tick as many boxes as this.
