This October, we will be recognising and celebrating Black History Month across Capita. The theme for this year is Proud to be. It encourages people to share what makes them proud of their heritage; the things that have helped to shape the rich and diverse culture we should all embrace in the UK and across the world.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, I want to take a moment to update you on the progress we have made so far, as an organisation that is striving to better support equality, diversity and inclusion. I want to recognise the significant contribution from our own colleagues. We have been listening to them and their views have helped to shape our approach.
Capita’s Employee Network Groups (ENGs) have been established across seven key areas, supporting a number of diverse groups. These groups are very active and have delivered a huge range of work. The ENG Chairs meet as a group every month so they can share input into policies and projects and escalate issues.
Improving our employee diversity data collection is a key commitment and this approach is starting to provide some excellent insights. We published our ethnicity pay gap data for the first time in Capita’s 2020 Responsible Business report. This year, Our People Survey will be anonymously analysed using employee characteristics for the first time, so we can better understand if the experiences of all colleagues at Capita are equal and inclusive.
Anti-racism training was launched earlier in 2021 and has now been completed by tens of thousands of our UK employees, with plans to expand this globally in 2022. We’ve had really positive feedback on the quality of this training and have even been asked by leading external companies to share access to it – which we’ve done at no cost.
Alongside this, ourmutual mentoring programmehas progressed from a very successful pilot to nearing the end of the first Capita-wide cohort, with planning now taking place as we look to recruit the next cohort. The feedback scores from participants have been exceptionally high.
I am particularly proud of the role that the Black Lives Matter Advisory Group has played to help develop a more robust structure of KPIs – to track our progress on ethnic diversity and ensure key objectives and metrics are built into the business.
Throughout October, our Black History Month activities are being led and shaped by our Black Employee and Embrace Networks who will be delivering a range of webinars, events and articles and posts for all colleagues to participate in. It will culminate in our first Black Employee Network awards to highlight the achievements of our colleagues who represent the pipeline of Black professional talent across Capita. The awards will also recognise the efforts of our colleagues who are allies and actively championing diversity and inclusion.
Whilst there is a lot to be proud of, we all know there is still a lot of work to do. I encourage you all to continue to raise awareness and celebrate - and to be proud of - the rich cultural diversity we have across Capita and beyond. It is important that we maintain focus and keep going with our commitment to ensure that we build an equitable, diverse and inclusive workplace and society.
