As of the latest announcement, the Living Wage Foundation has increased both the UK and London Living Wage rates. For employees outside London, the rate is now £12.60 per hour, while in London, where the cost of living is higher, it has been set at £13.85. These new rates mark a significant boost for workers, especially when compared to the Government’s minimum wage, offering full-time employees thousands more pounds annually. The increase directly benefits nearly half a million workers, who will now see their income more closely aligned with rising costs for essentials like housing, utilities, and food.

The importance of the real Living Wage cannot be overstated, particularly in today’s economic climate. Unlike the Government’s minimum wage, which is based on factors such as economic conditions and productivity, the Living Wage Foundation’s rate is the only independently calculated wage benchmark in the UK based solely on the actual cost of living. This means that it reflects what employees truly need to earn to cover basic expenses and maintain a reasonable standard of living.

Since its founding, the Living Wage Foundation’s efforts have been transformative. Over 15,000 accredited Living Wage Employers have voluntarily signed up to meet these standards, collectively securing nearly £3.5 billion in additional wages for lower-paid workers since 2011. For businesses, paying the real Living Wage isn’t only an investment in employees but also in long-term business sustainability, as fair wages often lead to increased staff retention, better productivity, and a stronger organizational reputation.

As Aviva and countless other companies continue to uphold these new Living Wage rates, they demonstrate a shared commitment to supporting employees in a way that truly makes a difference in their lives. In turn, these efforts contribute to a broader movement toward equitable pay practices that benefit individuals, families, and communities across the UK. With cost-of-living pressures affecting more people, the Living Wage Foundation's work has never been more crucial.
