29 Years in Defence – Claire’s Civil Service Journey

I’ve been a Civil Servant for 29 years, and every single year has been spent working in Defence! Fresh out of college, a family member suggested a temporary Admin Assistant role. I applied, thinking it would give me some office experience… and I’ve never looked back.

From the very beginning, I loved working for Defence, the sense of purpose, being part of something bigger than profit. But what truly turned this from a job into a career was the opportunity for growth. Over the years, I’ve achieved my Level 7 CIPD qualification and more recently a BA(Hons) in Professional Management. These weren’t easy, they took time, personal commitment, and hard work, but Defence supported me every step of the way. Beyond formal qualifications, I’ve benefited from volunteering opportunities and reverse mentoring, which the Civil Service values as part of personal development.

What I Enjoy Most

The people! You’d be amazed at the variety of roles within Defence. During my career, I’ve worked with professionals in healthcare, teaching, policing, and firefighting. I’ve met world-class chefs training soldiers, vehicle mechanics, PT instructors, graphic designers, social workers, occupational psychologists, the Defence MP, and even the Red Devils!

One of my most memorable experiences was spending six months in the Falkland Islands providing HR support for Civil Servants and locally recruited staff, even liaising with the Falkland Islands Government Tax Officer for end-of-year returns (a little nerve-wracking!). I cannot think of another organisation with such a diverse and fascinating workforce.
