Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Urology team at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, based at Broomfield Hospital. We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Consultant Urological Surgeon to support the continued development of our innovative and expanding service.

We are looking for a consultant with expertise in stone surgery and the ability to deliver a broad range of general urology services, including participation in the consultant on-call rota. An interest in paediatric urology would be advantageous.

This post offers the opportunity to work within a modern integrated urology service across Mid and South Essex. Cross-site working provides access to specialist procedures, including PCNL surgery at Broomfield Hospital. All sites are equipped with Holmium laser technology, with Broomfield serving as the Trust's centre for complex stone management, supported by a weekly Complex Stone MDT and emergency lithotripsy service.

You will join a forward-thinking department with redesigned patient pathways, strong multidisciplinary working, advanced endourology services and access to Da Vinci robotic systems across the Trust.

This opportunity would suit a consultant holding CCT or CESR, or a suitably experienced locum with a clear pathway to Specialist Registration.

Main duties of the job

Lead and coordinate the delivery of a high-quality specialist stone service while contributing to the wider provision of comprehensive urology services across the Trust.

Assess, diagnose and manage patients with urological conditions, ensuring safe, effective and patient-centred care throughout the treatment pathway.

Participate in the on-call rota, providing emergency urology cover and undertaking urgent and emergency procedures as required.

Deliver outpatient, inpatient and operative care, maintaining high clinical standards and ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to support effective clinical decision-making, service delivery and continuity of care.

Participate actively in clinical audit, governance, quality improvement and service development initiatives to enhance patient care and departmental performance.

Provide supervision, teaching and training to junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals, supporting education and workforce development.

Work in partnership with the Clinical Director and General Manager to support the development, implementation and monitoring of business plans and strategic objectives for the Urology Service.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• MBBS or Equivalent
• Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
• Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent
• FRCS (Urol) or equivalent Postgraduate qualification

Desirable criteria

• ATLS certificate

Experience

Essential criteria

• Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty
• Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
• Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
• Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
• Subspecialist interest stone surgery
• Provide consultant level on call service in urology

Desirable criteria

• DGH paediatric urology

Research/Audit Experience

Essential criteria

• Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
• Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

Desirable criteria

• Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal.
• Ability to supervise postgraduate research
• Masters or PhD qualification

Communication/Personal Skills

Essential criteria

• Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, other specialties and support staff
• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
• Able to organise and prioritise workload
• Ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances
• Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, resident doctors and other staff ability to teach clinical skills
