The Urology Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a key member of the multidisciplinary team, providing specialist nursing care, support, and advice to patients with suspected or confirmed urological cancers. The role focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centred care throughout the cancer pathway, ensuring patients and their families receive timely information, emotional support, and guidance to make informed decisions about their care.

Acting as a consistent point of contact from diagnosis onwards, the CNS undertakes holistic assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation to address patients' physical, psychological, emotional, and supportive care needs. Working closely with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals, the CNS coordinates care across services to ensure a seamless patient experience and optimal outcomes.

The role includes supporting patients through investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, advocating on their behalf, facilitating access to appropriate services, and communicating complex information in a clear and compassionate way. The CNS promotes personalised care and helps patients navigate their cancer journey.

The post holder contributes to service development, quality improvement, clinical governance, audit, and research activities, supporting evidence-based practice and continuous improvement within cancer services. They provide specialist expertise and advice to colleagues and play an important role in improving patient safety, experience, and clinical outcomes.

Working autonomously within agreed protocols and professional standards, the Urology Cancer CNS demonstrates advanced clinical judgement, excellent communication skills, and compassionate leadership to deliver safe, effective, and personalised cancer care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Registered Nurse with current NMC
• Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable criteria

• Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience.
• Post-registration qualification in cancer care, urology or related speciality
• Teaching and assessing qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

• Post-registration experience within an acute healthcare setting.
• Experience of managing a caseload of patients with complex care needs.
• Experience of multidisciplinary team working
• Experience of patient assessment, care planning and coordination

Desirable criteria

• Experience within urology, oncology or cancer services.
• Previous experience in a Clinical Nurse Specialist role.
• Experience of audit, research, quality improvement or service development projects
• Experience of patient education and supporting patients with complex decision-making

knowledge and skills

Essential criteria

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate sensitive and complex information compassionately.
• Ability to prioritise workload, have strong organisational and time management skills.
• IT skills including electronic patient records and Microsoft Office packages
• Sound clinical judgement and decision-making skills

• Knowledge of cancer pathways and national cancer standards
