Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join our Ophthalmology Team

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, forward thinking and compassionate Band 7 Ophthalmology Unit Manager to provide maternity cover and lead our busy ophthalmology department at Worcester Royal Hospital to cover Maternity leave for 12 months.

The successful candidate will provide strong clinical and operational leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and high quality patient care while supporting the development and wellbeing of the multidisciplinary team. You will provide visible and supportive leadership, promoting a culture where staff feel valued, supported and empowered to deliver their best.

We are looking for a registered nurse with significant post registration experience within Ophthalmology and with a proven track record of leadership.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will provide day to day leadership and management of the Ophthalmology unit.

Maintain high standards of patient safety, quality and clinical governance.

You will have overall responsibility for the day to day management and leadership of the Ophthalmology Department.

Lead and support a multidisciplinary team, promoting a positive and inclusive working environment.

Ensure safe and effective staffing and workforce management.

Monitor activity and performance against agreed service requirements.

Overall Aims and KeyResponsibilitiesToensure the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care at all times forophthalmology patients through the effective management of staff and resources.Toprovide effective leadership and to act as a good role model.Towork collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team andco-ordinate all aspects of ophthalmic care in the best interests of the patientand their family or carer Providing supervision, support and education to unqualified staff,qualified staff, students and new staff team members.Toensure auditing of and working towards the achievement of the NHS plan whichrelates to the outpatient environment. Encourageresearch based nursing care and practice within the department, discussing andchanging practice where appropriate. Participationin preceptorship programmes as appropriate and act as a facilitator, mentor, preceptor, role model to other members of the team. Toprovide clinical support supporting all aspects of the department includingtheatre, outpatient clinics, Acutes.

Patient Care

Toassess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care. To actively participate in team nursing andthe development of nursing care for the specific group of ophthalmic patients Toensure that evidence based practice is reviewed and where appropriate,changed. Also to identify where patientcare could be improved and take steps through discussion and project managementto develop and manage that change. Toshare and discuss and developments within the nursing or medical professionwhich may have an impact upon the outpatient service provided. Totake any appropriate action to ensure the safety of all patients, ensuring thatpatient care is undertaken by appropriately skilled nurses. To report any accidents/incidents to Matronoutpatients department Toensure that Trust Policies and Procedures are implemented and followed. Participatein development, setting and monitoring of standards, ensuring that acceptablelevels are maintained, actioning any changes required.

ManagerialResponsibilities

Totake management responsibility for the Ophthalmology outpatient departments andOphthalmology theatre on a day to day basis. Preparethe duty rota for staff, providing an effective well-balanced skill mix to meetthe requirements of the service and to ensure the presence of a suitablequalified and experienced nurse at all times. Totake the role of Laser Protection Supervisor as appointed by the Trust tomanage all aspects of the health, safety and maintenance of five Class IVmedical lasers in the department.Participatewith the appropriate personnel, any issues regarding patient care or managementconcerns. Maintaincustody of controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, orderingreplacements, checking and administering all drugs in accordance with the TrustDrug Administration of Medicines Policy.Toparticipate in audit relating to patient care, patient dependence and qualityassurance.Orderingand maintaining adequate stocks of supplies and provisions within thedepartment.Totake all measures reasonably possible to ensure Health and Safety standards aremet at all times, complying with the Health and Safety Policy and reporting allaccidents/incidents to the General Manager Ophthalmology and to monitor thesafe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies. Maintainaccurate records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms areused. Maintaingood relations and communications with all wards and departments with specialemphasis on Accident and Emergency and theatres.Beconversant with Trust policies and Procedures and their mechanisms.Toactively participate in departmental meetings, ensuring the dissemination ofinformation to all staff and encouraging discussion among all staff.

To ensure that the Ophthalmology nursing team have completedtraining and competencies to ensure safe and effective practice and report anyrelated concerns to the Matron for the ophthalmology service.

Audit, Quality and Risk Management Responsibilities

To contribute in setting and lead on the monitoring of measurablestandards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.To maintain awareness of the national, professional and localquality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g. ClinicalGovernance. To act as an investigator and undertake case studies following aclinical incident reporting to support the Matron for the Ophthalmologyservice. To uphold quality initiatives that improve customer care andenhance the interface between staff, patients, and visitors.
