Job description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be part of the multi-disciplinary team approach to care within the specialty of Trauma and Orthopaedics. The unit is internationally and nationally recognised. Professor Briggs' Getting Right First-Time programme has been established in our department. We have recently hosted two large Acute/Foundation Trusts' Trauma & Orthopaedic teams on the recommendation of Professor Briggs to work closely with us to develop and improve their pathways of care

As a teaching hospital we support the Trainees for the Southeast Thames rotation, incorporating the 'firm' approach to services, with Specialist Registrars working specifically with one or two consultants, but all medical personnel support the service when the patient flow demands. We are fortunate to receive Core Trainees, Foundation year I and II trainees and have established junior medical trust doctors. The Trauma & Orthopaedic department have self-contained specific outpatient services, with highly trained Orthopaedic Practitioners in purpose build casting departments. There is a team of Orthopaedic Care Practitioners who support the Consultant body and are involved in service provision. Inpatient trauma services are centralised to the Conquest site with Elective inpatient beds/wards on both acute sites. The post holder, with support, will continue to develop the role of Orthopaedic surgery in the Trust and STP wide.

Our Trauma Services at Conquest are also supported by two Ortho-geriatric Consultants, a junior medical Ortho-geriatric doctor, the orthopaedic junior doctors and foundation doctors.

The appointee should have a special interest in Knee Arthroplasty, Soft Tissue & Trauma Surgery.

The appointee will be required to work cross-site between the District General Hospital, Eastbourne and the Conquest Hospital, Hastings as well as at alternative satellite services within our identified CCGs. If required to travel cross site on the same day, appropriate travel time will be incorporated including mileage claim.

The Orthopaedic Department at East Sussex Healthcare is a busy department, which is friendly and supportive. We treat in excess of 600 hip fracture patients per year. We perform 4 all day elective operating lists per day, 1 all day trauma operating list and day surgery services.
