Trust Doctor (eqv to ST5+) in Imaging & Specialised Cardiology

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Trust Doctor (ST5+) to join our team based across both St Bartholomew's Hospital and University College London Hospital.

Barts Heart Centre is Europe's largest cardiac centre. It houses one of the world's largest cardiac MRI services along with all other advanced imaging modalities utilizing 3 cardiac MRI scanners, a dedicated cardiac CT scanner and 10 echocardiography labs. Specialised cardiology services include the internationally-recognised cardio-oncology and heart muscle disease services, the regional infective endocarditis service and the adult congenital heart disease service. The advanced heart failure service includes a VAD programme, ECMO service on the specialised heart-failure ITU and CRT device clinics. It is also the heart attack centre for the region and also provides invasive and structural cardiology services and emergency arrythmia services as well as ablation therapies in 10 cardiac cath labs

Main duties of the job

These posts provide exposure to a wide variety of cardiovascular conditions and are suitable for those with a good grounding in general cardiology who wish to gain experience in advanced imaging/specialised cardiology. The Barts imaging/specialised clinical fellow post has a track record of successfully transitioning many fellows into cardiology consultant posts across the UK and internationally.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• To support all cardiac imaging modalities [cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, advanced echocardiography (exercise/dobutamine/CPEX stress, deformation and 3D echocardiography, TOE) and nuclear cardiology]. This will include supervising and performing studies (after appropriate training and competency assessment), reporting studies on patients, maintaining patient safety at all times and assisting in the smooth running of these departments.
• To provide, as part of the rota for cardiac imaging and specialised services, support for the outpatient, inpatient and MDT management of specialised cardiology service patients (cardio-oncology, heart muscle disease, advanced heart failure, preventive cardiology).
• There is approximately a 1:7 9AM-5PM ward week at UCLH providing a cardiology consult service under consultant supervision to the Medical Assessment Unit, ITU, oncology and other wards. Providing cardiology advice (with the support of the cardio-oncology team) at Europe's largest haemato-oncology unit at UCLH is a key component of the consult service. Specialist nursing support is available.
• The non-consult weeks typically involve 3-4 sessions of training in advanced imaging (cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, advanced echocardiography), MDTs preparation, specialist clinics (cardio-oncology/heart failure/inherited heart disease), general cardiology clinics and sessions for admin/research/audit/teaching. The rota is compliant with the European Working Time Directive

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• The applicant must have achieved a primary medical qualification as recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC)
• Current Full GMC registration with a license to practice
• MRCP UK (or Equivalent)

Desirable criteria

• CCT in Cardiology from UK training programme
• Certification/accreditation in cardiac imaging (any modality)/inherited cardiac disease/cardio-oncology /heart failure
• Current ALS certification

Experience

Essential criteria

• Experience in general cardiology at ST5+ level (e.g. independent in transthoracic echocardiography, comfortable in managing acutely unwell cardiology patients on the wards)

Desirable criteria

• Experience in working at ST7-8 level in cardiology
• Previous experience in advanced cardiac imaging
