Job overviewApplications are invited for Trust Doctor posts in Critical Care Medicine at The Royal London Hospital (RLH), part of Barts Health NHS Trust, for trainees at ST4+ level or equivalent.
RLH is home to one of the busiest and most dynamic critical care units in London: a 44-bed general ICU/HDU on the 4th floor, alongside a further 12-bed post-operative surgical HDU on the 3rd floor. The unit manages a broad case-mix, including tertiary referrals in Neurology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Renal and Stroke Medicine, high-risk surgical patients, and major trauma, supported by London's HEMS base and a busy Emergency Department.
Successful candidates will gain excellent clinical exposure across level 2 and 3 care, with structured opportunities for education, audit and research. Within this programme, fellows are warmly encouraged to enquire about dedicated sub-specialty fellow posts currently available, including Critical Care Follow-Up, End-of-Life Care, and Trauma Governance - each offering protected time to develop expertise and a project portfolio in these areas.

Main duties of the jobDuties of the role when working on the Critical Care Unit and Follow up ClinicThe duties are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.
1. Admitting emergency patients to the ACCU.
2. Involvement in day-to-day inpatient management under the direction of the Consultants and other senior trainees.
3. Fellows with extensive experience in Anaesthesia may also attend Cardiac Arrest calls throughout the hospital and Trauma calls in the Emergency department
4. Liaising with medical / surgical teams about patient's admission, progress, and discharge.
5. Liaising with nursing staff, physiotherapists, and other clinical staff about patient status.
6. Caring for patients on the ACCU. This includes prescribing and supervising treatment, instituting invasive monitoring, and gathering and interpreting results.
7. Explaining the patient's condition and progress clearly to patients and relatives.
8. Maintaining exact medical records, including data for audit purposes.
9. Providing and receiving pertinent handover at the start and at the end of shift.

Person specificationQualifications/Higher Qualifications: Essential criteria - MB BS or equivalent
- Medical registration (GMC or equivalent depending on country)
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification or equivalent
Desirable criteria - MRCP, MRCS, MRCEM, FRCA, EDIC, FFICM or equivalent
- Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (or equivalent)
- Postgraduate Qualification (eg: MSc, MD, PhD)
- Formal qualification in education
Knowledge & Experience Essential criteria - A minimum of 12 months critical care experience
- Experience of working within a national health service or equivalent
Desirable criteria - A minimum of 24 months critical care experience
- Previous experience working on a Neurocritical care or neurosurgical unit
- Accreditation in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
Training Expected Essential criteria - Post foundation training (Postgraduate years 1 and 2) or equivalent
- Additional postgraduate training to Core level (Acute Care Common Stem ACCS, Internal Medicine Training IMT, Core Anaesthetics training CAT, or equivalent)
Desirable criteria - Advanced airway skills including transfer of the critically ill and intubation skills
- Completion of stage 1 ICM training or equivalent Post CCT or equivalent
- Previous experience of managing or delivering governance-related activity
Academic Achievements Essential criteria - Some evidence of postgraduate academic or educational work
- Participation in audit/ quality improvement project work
Desirable criteria - Any published peer reviewed abstract or paper
- Presentations at International conference(s)
- Previous experience in delivering education, ideally in an interprofessional setting
Personal Skills Essential criteria - Flexible approach to work and evidence of team working
- Computer Literacy: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Personal qualities Essential criteria - Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work flexibly and under pressure
