Trust Doctor (eqv to ST3+) in Anaesthetics

This is a full-time post for doctors with a minimum of four years' experience in Anaesthesia, for an average of 48 hours per week, mostly antisocial.

Applicants should have an interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia but also wish to maintain and develop their skills in anaesthesia over a broad range of general, orthopaedic and gynaecological specialties.

The majority of the successful candidate's rota will be on Labour Ward (including C-section lists) and Emergency Theatre, both daytime and out of hours.

The cover out of hours is provided by a team of three resident Anaesthetists, with the consultant anaesthetist on-call from home.

Regular days in elective theatres (orthopaedic, gynae or general surgery) will also be part of the rota.

During the day, a staff grade is partnered with a consultant obstetric anaesthetist allowing for training and development. Out of hours, there are two staff grade anaesthetists allocated to Labor Ward duties together with a third anaesthetist providing cover for surgical emergencies, patient transfer and paediatric resuscitation.

This post attracts a £6,000 retention bonus, payable as a lump sum in the second month of employment. The bonus is subject to a 12-month retention period and will be recoverable on a pro-rata basis should the postholder leave before completing 12 months service.

There is also a 1A(50%) banding payable for this role

Main duties of the job
• Provide safe, effective and caring anaesthetic services.
• Management of paediatric cardiac arrests and deteriorating paediatric patients requiring L2 and L3 care, and support of neonatal teams with critically ill neonates.
• Provision of anaesthetic support for the transportation of ventilated patients.
• Participate in the anaesthetic on call rota covering Labour ward and theatres at Newham Hospital, including paediatric and obstetric emergencies.
• To ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, quality improvement, and evidence-based research.
• Participate actively in clinical governance, including reporting of incidents, undertaking learning responses, compassionate engagement, duty of candour and responding to complaints.
• To be familiar with the Royal College of Anaesthetists' curriculum for Resident Doctor Training and contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials and clinical supervision.
• To participate in and contribute to the departmental teaching programme.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Full GMC registration and a licence to practice

Desirable criteria

• FRCA or equivalent
• Higher degree such as MSc or PhD

Experience

Essential criteria

• Wide experience in all areas of anaesthesia, including obstetrics and paediatrics.
• Minimum 4 years of specialist training in Anaesthesia including the management of Obstetric emergencies and the initial assessment of the critically ill patient

Desirable criteria

• Quality improvement projects and/or research related to Orthopaedic / regional anaesthesia.
• Member of ESRA or equivalent society
• Experience of the UK healthcare system
• Experience in managing paediatric airway

Life Support qualifications

Essential criteria

• ALS provider
• PALS/EPALS/APLS provider ATLS

Desirable criteria

• ALS instructor
• PALS/EPALS/APLS instructor

Research

Essential criteria

• Understanding of and participation in research
• GCP

Desirable criteria

• Publication record in Anaesthetic journals
• Presentation of papers, posters or abstracts at local, regional or national meetings

Quality Improvement

Essential criteria

• Evidence of completion of QI projects
• Understanding of basic improvement methodology

Desirable criteria

• Further training in advanced QI techniques
• Publication or presentation of improvement projects

Leadership

Essential criteria

• Demonstrable skills in clinical leadership

Desirable criteria

• Completion of a leadership course

Teaching Skills and Experience

Essential criteria

• Record of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across the whole of the multidisciplinary team

Desirable criteria

• Record of attendance at train the trainer course or equivalent
• Completion of clinical supervisors' portfolio
• Higher degree in medical education

Participation in Clinical Governance

Essential criteria

• An understanding of clinical governance and incident reporting

Desirable criteria

• Involvement in investigation of clinical incidents and root cause analysis
