Job title: Technical Assistant (Education)

Reports to: Technical Manager (Education and Engineering)

Service: AV and Technical Resources

Main purpose of the job: The role holder will work alongside other specialist technical staff to provide technical support, advice and demonstration to support academic colleagues in the following broad practical areas: Design and Technology (DT), Food Technology, Arts, Science, and Maths in the School of Education. The post holder will predominantly work within DT, Food Technology and Art areas, while working flexibly across Science and Maths areas to provide support as required to meet operational needs and priorities within the School of Education. You will maintain specialist laboratory and workshop spaces, tools and equipment and ensure that materials are ordered, prepared and available to support practical teaching. You will liaise closely with academic colleagues to ensure effective technical support for teaching, learning, and practical activities. You will work with academic staff to understand the purpose of practical activities and provide suitable technical advice, alternatives, or adaptations where required.

You will work under the overall direction of the Technical Manager and must be able to work effectively as part of the Education and Engineering Technical team in AV and Technical Resources. Whilst this role will predominantly work within School of Education, you will be part of a community of Technicians in the Audio Visual and Technical Resources, that support teaching and learning across the University, ensuring a supportive network of comparably skilled individuals.

Main duties and responsibilities: 1. To contribute to the day-to-day running and maintenance of the teaching workshops and labs as part of

a team of technicians working in collaboration with academic and professional services stakeholders to provide an exceptional learning experience for students.

2. To prepare, provide and set out equipment and resources for all practical teaching and share responsibility for safely clearing away resources at the end of each taught session.

3. To support staff and students in the use of specialist resources, monitoring and maintaining sufficient stock during and between sessions.

4. To ensure compliance with health and safety standards in the workshops for both machinery and operating practices and contribute to the preparation of risk assessments and standard operating procedures.

5. To maintain specialist teaching resources to include arranging annual inspections, maintenance and repair schedules for workshop and laboratory systems, equipment and machines.

6. To provide flexible support for a range of technical duties, with opportunities to develop further skills and knowledge across the remit of specialist subject areas offered within the School of Education.

7. To work closely with the Technical Manager, academic staff and other technical colleagues to gain an

understanding of project requirements and objectives, preparing samples and assisting in testing. 8. To undertake any other requirements commensurate with the seniority of the post/as required by the

head of department

Education and Qualifications

Essential • Educated to A level in relevant discipline or appropriate

industry-equivalent experience.

Knowledge and skills

Essential

• Good working knowledge of primary and secondary school technologies, e.g. DT and food technology equipment.

• Demonstrable practical skills. • Excellent organisational skills, self-motivated to work

independently and as a part of a team. • Awareness of health and safety issues and practices in the

classroom / workshop / labs.

• Ability to move equipment safely around the classroom / workshops / labs.

• Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and students, e.g. to explain instructions verbally and to write classroom / workshop protocols.

• Ability to communicate effectively and liaise with other university departments and external suppliers.

• Ability to demonstrate and provide a professional, helpful, and responsive service to students, academic staff, colleagues, and visitors, ensuring that technical support is delivered in a clear, approachable, and effective manner.

• Proficient in the use of IT packages including Microsoft Office and internet applications.

Desirable • Good knowledge of ICT software including CAD and CAM.

Work experience Essential

• Experience of working independently and as part of a team, and prioritising work in a busy environment.

Desirable • Experience of working as a technician within an education

setting.

Communication skills

Essential

• Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with university staff, students, external suppliers and clients.

• High level and accurate written communication skills e.g. for updating risk assessments and standard operating procedures.

• Ability to deliver excellent responsive service to staff and students.

Other requirements

Essential

• Good interpersonal skills. • Willingness to be flexible in duties undertaken. • High level of dexterity required in order to prepare, maintain

and repair equipment and resources.

• Willingness to be flexible in duties undertaken, e.g. work evenings and weekends on occasion to support university events such as Open Days. Any evening or weekend work would be occasional and by prior arrangement.

• Will be required to undertake manual handling of workshop and lab equipment.

• Commitment to continuing personal and professional development.

Desirable

• A good appreciation of working in education and specifically issues concerning technical support for teaching and learning in technology-related areas and providing support for academic staff and students engaged in this work.

• First aid at work training. • Ability to drive the departmental vehicle.

Additional Information • The appointment is offered on a permanent term and full time only basis immediately, subject to

references. • The appointment is usually made at the bottom of the range. Where a candidate's current total

remuneration already exceeds the bottom point, consideration will be given to the level of skills, experience and profile that the candidate is bringing to the role. The total remuneration of other staff doing the same or similar work within the department who have similar skills, experience and profile should also be taken into account.

• Due to the operational nature of this role, it requires the role holder to be on campus every day.

• This appointment will not require a DBS check • The annual leave entitlement is 25 days p.a. Additionally there are 3 - 4 days for the University's

operational efficiency initiatives at Christmas.

• Your normal hours of work will be 35 hours per week, plus a lunch break of one hour each day
