Job description



 

An exciting opportunity is available for a Technician to join the School of Geographical Sciences. Working with the Teaching Lab Manager in the School's Teaching Lab, the Technician will support teaching activities in Physical Geography by providing guidance and training in relevant techniques and processes both for the lab and field environments. The Technician will work closely with undergraduate and masters students, preparing for and supporting lab and field-based practicals and project-based experimental work. Typical activities will include making reagents and preparing equipment for taught laboratory classes and supporting undergraduate students undertaking laboratory projects with techniques such as loss on ignition, chlorophyll determinations and sample digestions. The post holder will be involved in the upkeep of the lab space and field equipment, ensuring that all instrumentation is maintained and used according to the correct procedures, compliant with good health and safety practice.

 

The successful candidate will have a relevant qualification at GCSE, or NVQ level 2/3, or equivalent level, plus proven experience of working in a Physical Geography/Environmental Sciences lab and field environment. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required, as is the ability to take a positive and flexible approach to work in order to deal with a variety of requests and tasks. A full driving licence applicable to the UK is essential for the post as the role holder will be required to drive for field work activities and the movement of equipment between different laboratory spaces.
