The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for exceptional personnel to join our team of thirteen support staff at Rothera Research Station, comprising chefs, station support assistants and station general assistants. Together they provide essential catering, domestic and general support duties to look after our staff and logistical processes. BAS enables and delivers world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions, employing experts from many different professions to maintain its stations, support its scientists and keep everyone safe. Skilled science, operational and support staff based in Cambridge, Antarctica and the Arctic, work together to deliver research that uses the Polar Regions to advance understanding of the Earth as a sustainable planet. Through its extensive logistic capability and know-how, BAS facilitates access for the British and international science communities to the UK polar research operation. Numerous national and international collaborations, combined with excellent infrastructure help sustain a world-leading position for the UK in Antarctic affairs. You'd be joining the Polar Operations department as a member of Station Operations for Rothera Research Station. Station Operations also includes management functions, such as station leaders and logistics management, as well as science support roles for marine research. The team works alongside colleagues in Technical Services and Vehicles Engineering to enable Field and Air Operations so that scientists are supported in their research activities.

Collectively, you'd help us to deliver essential support functions to keep approximately 150 staff nourished in a clean and comfortable environment, while ensuring cargo operations efficiently resupply the station and waste is managed in accordance with our environmental policies.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop an understanding of the different types of positions deployed to the Antarctic, necessary to sustain a national polar research programme. Seasonal staff are encouraged to return, to develop their knowledge and understanding of work in Antarctica, and provide consistency to the operation of the station. Each support team has a head position, which provides opportunities for returning staff to take on management responsibilities, as well as developing their inter-personal and decision-making skills.

A large modernisation project is underway at Rothera, which has been ongoing since 2018, delivering a new wharf, resurfaced runway and a new operations facility, known as the Discovery Building. This season, the Discovery Building will be commissioned and handed over to BAS to occupy. As members of the support staff, you'd also be enabling the construction team to complete this ground-breaking project as well as take your place as some of the first users of this amazing new capability.
