Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The trainee will be expected to complete a minimal number of autopsies to meet Royal College of Pathologists training requirements. They will accompany the consultant members of the East Midlands Forensic Pathology Unit on suspicious death cases dependent upon their working time and rotas. These take place within the area of the East Midlands. They will also accompany the forensic pathology consultants to court to gain experience of the medico-legal system. By the end of their training, trainees will be expected to give evidence in Coroner's Court in cases they have undertaken.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria

• MB ChB or equivalent
• Full or limited GMC registration
• FRCPath Part 1 Histopathology

Desirable criteria

• BSc or equivalent.
• Higher research degree (MSc, PhD, MD)

Experience

Essential criteria

• Two years post-registration experience in a histopathology post recognised by RCPath with evidence of successful progression and completion of ICPT training.

Professional Skills

Essential criteria

• A sound level of knowledge of basic science and the ability to interpret its relevance to clinical practice.
• Ability to interpret a wide range of clinical data from all specialties with reference to pathological interpretation.
• Knowledge and experience of basic techniques in histopathology and cytopathology, including specimen dissection, microscopy, performing an autopsy and writing clinical pathology reports.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
