Job summary

The post holder will undertake a full range of general ENT work.
  • Provision of advanced clinical skills and routine examination investigations according to accepted medical practice, with an emphasis on evidence based healthcare and financial effectiveness.
  • Ward rounds, outpatients, continuity of care, follow ups and discharges.
  • Administrative duties in the department, liaising with consultants in related departments.
  • To contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students and staff.
  • Periodic cover for colleagues leave.
  • Participation in medical audit research and undergraduate medical education along with the training of staff.


Office accommodation and secretarial support will be provided. IT training on hospital systems will be given.

Main duties of the job

Ward rounds, outpatient sessions, and supervision of junior staff.

Working collaboratively with colleagues to develop the service further and improve it.

Administrative duties as required within the Directorate.

Cover of colleagues' leave.

Participation in clinical audit, clinical governance and CPD appropriate to experience, together with contribution to education and training of medical students and junior staff. (We receive medical students from Birmingham Medical School. The medical school finals for the agenda block, which includes ENT, are held three times annually at Russells Hall and is the only major medical school examination held outside Birmingham).

Attendance at meetings as required.

Qualifications, Registration, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC
  • Specialist ENT qualifications such as DOHNS, MRCS (ENT) or equivalent
  • Commitment to ENT as a career with at least 3 years' experience with at least 12 months within an ENT department in the NHS within the past 2 years.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and demonstration of active participation in CPD
  • Commitment to organise education and training of junior doctors, allied healthcare professionals, staff, nurses and medical students.
  • Willingness to participate in management activities such as governance, audit and department development
  • Motivated to ensure achievement of defined targets
  • Experience of research, particularly in collaboration with other clinicians
  • Potential to cope with stressful situations, undertake responsibility and be a team player
  • Enthusiastic and approachable with excellent communication skills
Desirable

  • Higher Additional qualification
  • Experience in specialties allied to ENT, e.g. OMFS or Plastics
  • Track record of publishing and presenting Evidence of interests outside medicine
Relevant knowledge and experience requirements

  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialty
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to advise on the smooth running of specialist services
  • Ability to prioritise workloads both clinical and non-clinical when subjected to conflicting pressures
Up-to-date knowledge of clinical issues related to speciality
