Person specification

Knowledge, Skills & Performance

Essential criteria
  • Holds acceptable primary medical qualification
  • Significant experience of full-time equivalent postgraduate training
  • Competence in managing medical emergencies.
  • Evidence of procedural competencies in PICU (intubation, central venous access, arterial line insertion etc.)
  • An appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • A commitment to personal CPD


Desirable criteria
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree Valid Life Support Course (APLS, ATLS, ALS or similar)
  • Experience in paediatric intensive care/ NICU/Anaesthesia/ adult ICU
  • Experience in transportation of critically ill patients
  • Involvement in Research & Publication


Safety & Quality

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the basic principles of evidence-based practice, patient safety, audit, clinical risk management, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Time management skills.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience of audit/ Quality improvement project


Maintaining Trust

Essential criteria
  • Honesty, integrity, awareness of ethical dilemmas, respect for confidentiality
  • Certificate of Good Standing from current employer


Communication, partnership & Teamwork

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other people within a team
  • Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues in all disciplines
  • Self-awareness, with knowledge of personal strengths and weaknesses, impact and areas for development
  • Interest in and knowledge of the importance of leadership and management for clinicians
  • English Language Skills: Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues and be demonstrated by having ( the following scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall 7.5, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7 Writing 7 or medicine version of OET with at least a grade 'B' in each testing area (speaking, listening, reading and writing) obtained in the same test

  • Evidence of effective team working and leadership, supported by multi-source feedback or workplace-based assessments
