Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Here is an exciting opportunity for you to join us a s a Senior Clinical Fellow.

This post is for a senior clinical fellow doctor in General Surgery unit at Southend Hospital at ST3-ST8 level. The main role of the post is to support the consultants and FY1 to ST2 level doctors in delivering In-patient care within this busy and forward-thinking department.

They will be part of the Register level on call rota. This placement is NOT formally recognised for training, but activities match those of the training registrars and the appointee's career aspirations and development will be supported by educational supervision and regular appraisal. There will be opportunities to rotate through subspecialty placements.

Main duties of the job

 Liaise between nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives, and senior medical staff.
• Attend to the day-to-day management of day case, outpatient and in-patients.
• Attend and participate in ward rounds and operating theatre sessions as timetabled.
• Attend general and specialist out-patient, diagnostic clinics.
• Teach medical students and more junior colleagues as directed.
• Supervise, monitor, and assist the F1 to ST2 level doctors.
• Take part in rostered emergency work.
• To keep up to date with all administrative duties including letters, results and discharge summaries as required.

• Study for higher examinations and maintain continued professional development.
• Undertake and assist in audit projects at various times. • Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
• To co-operate with members of the HR department when monitoring hours of work.
• Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• MBBS or equivalent
• MRCS or equivalent
• Full registration with the General Medical Council

Desirable criteria

• FRCS or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

• Previous experience at Clinical Fellow ST3 or equivalent level
• At least 2 years of core surgical training or equivalent

Desirable criteria

• Ability to develop and maintain a sub-specialty interest

communication skills

Essential criteria

• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, patients and realtives
• Ability to work part of a multi-disciplinary team with appropriate interpersonal skills for effective team working

Audit and governance

Essential criteria

• Interest in, and knowledge of medical audit and understands the principles of evidence-based audits
• An understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance

Desirable criteria
