Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical: The successful candidate will work within the Bariatric and Upper GI Multidisciplinary Team setting, administering the day to day running of the Bariatric & Upper GI firm and supervising and supporting the junior doctors as part of this team. The successful post holder will be expected to assist and manage the inpatients as well as taking referrals from ED and other departments. The candidate will also be expected to be part of the on call rota for General Surgery.

Teaching: Although this appointment is not accredited for training, the appointee will be expected to participate in some of the educational and training programmes within the department and the hospital.

Research: Several clinical research projects are in progress and ample opportunities exist for presentation and publications to the learned societies.

Audit: SCF will be encouraged to carry out audit projects with the support of audit department and must attend the regular department audit sessions.

Administrative: Offices and administrative services are available.

Study leave and Training: This post is not recognised by the London Deanery as a training post but facilities for study leave exist. There is a good recently expanded Medical Library situated in the Postgraduate Centre and Department Library facilities are also available.

A wide variety of postgraduate medical education courses and lectures are available locally including:
  • Biweekly Surgical Simulation Sessions on Inovus augmented reality surgical simulators
  • Weekly Surgical Journal Club
  • Weekly Benign Upper GI MDTs, biweekly Bariatric MDTs, monthly Complex Upper GI/Reflux MDTs
  • Courses of lectures arranged by clinical tutor
  • Weekly physician clinical meetings
  • Regular audit meetings

Education and Qualifications

Essential
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Post-CCT or being within 6 months of CCT (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential
  • Experience at senior registrar level for General, Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery, including emergency surgery in NHS
  • Experience of audit and research
  • Evidence of teaching ability
  • Evidence of strong verbal and written skills
  • Demonstration of keeping up to date with: General UGI Bariatric and Emergency Surgery
  • Teaching skills
