Detailed job description and main responsibilities

General Duties:
  1. Patients to be seen and assessed on the ward prior to surgery or admission to Intensive Care.
  2. Keeping such records as may be required. These must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties, including discharge and Clinic letters.
  3. Effect detailed handover at the end of a duty shift
  4. In the event of a list cancellation or early finish, be available on site for possible re-assignment to other lists.
  5. Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s) in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this paragraph are exceptional. In particular, the doctor will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
  6. To read and follow any protocols and clinical guidelines laid down (either in writing or verbally) for the anaesthetic department.
  7. In case of any difficulties, either clinical or administrative, to ensure advice is sought from a senior colleague.
  8. To accurately gather data required for clinical audit and to participate in audit meetings. Keep a log book (electronic or written) of the cases anaesthetised.
  9. Follow the General Medical Council 'Good Medical Practice' guidance with respect to all duties (www.gmc-uk.org)

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification (MD, Diploma in Anaesthesia)


Desirable criteria
  • FRCA or equivalent


Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles and willingness to take part.


Ability

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of specialty Evidence of specialty and general skills and potential to develop new skills.
  • Ability to make good medical notes. Ability to give evidence based clinical decisions. Ability to give effective feedback to colleagues and staff.


Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate level of clinical skills.
  • Experience in ITU and Obstetric Anaesthesia


Motivation

Essential criteria
  • Punctuality. Continuing professional development.


Desirable criteria
  • Ability to organise own learning and study time.


Other Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Able to pass Pre-employment health screening.
  • Registration with the GMC or if not registered a reference number from the GMC

  • Outside interests
  • EEA National, Settled status/ Rights or Residence in the EU/Highly skilled migrant


Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent all round experience of DGH work
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in Anaesthetics
  • Ability to work independently, but aware of own limitations and know when to seek advice from senior colleagues


Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in NHS
