Position Description:

At CGI, we're shaping the future of secure digital innovation, delivering advanced technology solutions that help government and defence clients overcome complex challenges. As a Senior Platform Engineer within our Space, Defence and Intelligence business, you'll play a key role in designing and delivering secure, scalable cloud platforms that enable mission-critical services. You'll have the freedom to take ownership of technical solutions, explore emerging technologies and influence engineering best practices, supported by a collaborative community of experts. Working with modern cloud technologies and automation tools, you'll help drive innovation, improve platform performance and deliver lasting value for our clients, while developing your expertise through continuous learning and career development opportunities.

CGI was recognised in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work List 2025 and has been named a UK 'Best Employer' by the Financial Times. We offer a competitive salary, excellent pension, private healthcare, plus a share scheme (3.5% + 3.5% matching) which makes you a CGI Partner not just an employee. We are committed to inclusivity, building a genuinely diverse community of tech talent and inspiring everyone to pursue careers in our sector, including our Armed Forces, and are proud to hold a Gold Award in recognition of our support of the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. Join us and you'll be part of an open, friendly community of experts. We'll train and support you in taking your career wherever you want it to go.

Due to the secure nature of the programme, the role is bases 5 days a week on site in Central London. You will also need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance.

Your future duties and responsibilities:

In this role, you'll take ownership of designing, building and optimising secure cloud platforms that support critical government and defence programmes. Working primarily with AWS, Terraform and modern automation technologies, you'll develop resilient, scalable infrastructure and help accelerate the delivery of innovative digital solutions.

You'll have the opportunity to tackle complex engineering challenges, influence architectural decisions and introduce improvements that enhance security, reliability and operational efficiency.

As a senior member of an agile engineering team, you'll collaborate with talented colleagues, mentor fellow engineers and help shape platform engineering standards. You'll be encouraged to explore new approaches, share your expertise and drive continuous improvement, with access to learning opportunities and a supportive environment that enables you to grow your technical capabilities and make a meaningful impact.

Key responsibilities:
• Design & Deliver: Architect, build and maintain secure, scalable AWS cloud platforms supporting mission-critical applications and services.
• Automate & Optimise: Develop reusable Terraform modules and implement Infrastructure as Code to improve consistency, efficiency and scalability.
• Build & Integrate: Design, maintain and enhance CI/CD pipelines using GitLab to enable reliable, automated software delivery.
• Engineer & Innovate: Develop and support containerised and serverless solutions using Docker, AWS Lambda and other AWS managed services.
• Secure & Strengthen: Embed security, resilience and operational best practices throughout the platform engineering lifecycle.
• Script & Streamline: Use Python, Bash and automation techniques to simplify operations, reduce manual effort and improve platform performance.
• Collaborate & Influence: Work across multidisciplinary agile teams, producing technical designs and helping guide engineering decisions.
• Mentor & Develop: Support fellow engineers, share technical knowledge and contribute to consistent engineering standards and best practices.
• Improve & Evolve: Identify opportunities to adopt emerging technologies, enhance platform capabilities and drive continuous improvement.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

To succeed in this role, you'll bring strong hands-on experience in cloud platform engineering, with expertise in AWS, infrastructure automation and modern software delivery practices.

You'll be comfortable solving complex technical challenges, collaborating across engineering teams and taking ownership of high-quality solutions. We're looking for someone who combines technical expertise with curiosity, creativity and a commitment to continuous improvement. You'll be supported in expanding your capabilities, and we welcome applications from candidates who meet most, rather than every, requirement.

Essential qualifications and experience:
• Strong experience designing, building and operating cloud platforms, ideally using AWS.
• Hands-on expertise with Terraform, Infrastructure as Code and reusable infrastructure modules.
• Strong understanding of AWS services, cloud-native architectures and platform engineering principles.
• Proven experience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitLab and GitLab CI/CD.
• Practical experience with Docker and containerised applications.
• Experience developing or supporting serverless architectures using AWS Lambda and managed cloud services.
• Strong scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash or similar languages.
• Ability to produce clear, high-quality technical designs and documentation.
• Experience working within agile engineering teams and contributing to engineering standards.
• Strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions.
• A proactive approach to mentoring, knowledge sharing and continuous professional development.
Desirable experience:
• Experience with AWS container services, including ECS or EKS, or familiarity with Kubernetes.
• Designing, implementing or managing multi-account AWS environments.
• Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and integrating security throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
• Strong experience with Microsoft Azure or other cloud platforms, particularly where AWS experience is limited.
• Previous experience delivering solutions within secure, government, defence or highly regulated environments.
