Job overview

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Research Resident to join our specialist Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) Service, based at the Western Eye and Charing Cross hospitals.

This is a full time, dedicated research and audit post with no on-call, theatre or outpatient commitments. You will lead the collection, analysis and interpretation of clinical outcome data for patients managed within the TED Service, evaluating treatment outcomes and supporting service improvement. Working alongside ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, specialist nurses, orthoptists and research staff, you will establish and maintain a comprehensive prospective and retrospective TED outcomes database.

We are looking for a doctor on the GMC register with a licence to practise, a medical degree, final FRCOphth or equivalent and higher ophthalmology training at ST4/5 level. Demonstrable experience in thyroid eye disease management, endocrinology services, clinical research or audit, research data management, dataset analysis and peer-reviewed publication is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a Senior Research Resident in the Thyroid Eye Disease Service at the Western Eye Hospital, with some cross-site sessions at Charing Cross, reporting to the Consultant Ophthalmologist and TED Lead. This is a full time research and audit post with no on-call, theatre or outpatient sessions.

The post holder will lead the collection and validation of clinical data for patients managed within the service and conduct retrospective and prospective audits, assessing endocrine and ophthalmic parameters relevant to disease activity, severity, treatment response and outcomes. They will populate and maintain the REDCap database, develop data dictionaries, protocols and standard operating procedures and ensure data quality through regular validation.

Data review draws on electronic patient records, correspondence, imaging, laboratory investigations and treatment records. The post holder will produce data summaries for investigators and service leads, contribute to abstracts, manuscripts and grant applications, co-author peer-reviewed publications and present findings at national and international meetings.

The post holder will work with ophthalmology, endocrinology and radiology colleagues, attend TED MDT and project governance meetings and liaise with Trust research governance teams. They will be an organised, self-motivated researcher with excellent communication, strong attention to detail and commitment to the Trust values

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full time Senior Research Resident post within the specialist Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) Service, based at the Western Eye Hospital with some cross-site sessions at Charing Cross. The post is dedicated to research and audit, with no on-call, theatre or outpatient sessions.

Main duties
• Lead the collection and validation of clinical data for patients in the TED Service.
• Conduct retrospective and prospective audits evaluating patient outcomes.
• Assess endocrine and ophthalmic parameters for disease activity, severity and treatment response.
• Populate and maintain the REDCap database, ensuring completeness and accuracy of datasets.
• Develop data dictionaries, collection protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Work with research and information governance teams to meet data protection requirements.
• Review electronic patient records, correspondence, imaging, laboratory and treatment data.
• Generate data summaries and audit reports for investigators and service leads.
• Contribute to abstracts, manuscripts and grant applications.
• Lead and co-author peer-reviewed publications and present at national and international meetings.

Requirements: GMC registration with licence to practise; medical degree; FRCOphth or equivalent; ophthalmology training at ST4/5; experience in TED and clinical research.

• On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
• Medical degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent).
• Higher medical training experience of Ophthalmology training (ST 4/5 equivalent) Appropriate Royal College Membership
• Currently working in NHS

Knowledge/skills Clinical expertise in Specialty/sub specialty

Essential criteria

• Demonstrable experience in thyroid eye disease management.
• Experience in clinical research and/or audit.
• Experience of data collection and management for research studies.
• Experience of scientific writing and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

• Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
