The School of Engineering and Technology is based at the University of Hull campus. Working with local and national industries, the school hosts several externally funded research programmes in key research themes including healthcare and tissue engineering.

The Medical Research Council (MRC), in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust, NC3Rs and Innovate UK, has invested £15.9 million to support "Novel Human in vitro Disease Model Clusters" (IHDM-C) initiative, that aims to redefine human-based research models for greater understanding of disease and the acceleration of new medicine. This supports the government's strategy 'Replacing animals in science: a strategy to support the development, validation and uptake of alternative methods'.

Effective delivery of this programme requires sustained cross-cluster coordination and active engagement with industry, clinical, regulatory, and third-sector partners. A full-time Cross-Cluster Project Manager will be appointed to lead the operational delivery of cross-cluster activities. Working with the Academic Lead at Edinburgh and Deputy Lead at Hull, the postholder will translate strategic objectives into an integrated programme of work, with clear milestones, responsibilities, budgets, risks and measurable outcomes.

The postholder will hold day-to-day accountability for cross-cluster project management, governance, stakeholder engagement, communications and performance reporting, and will act as the principal escalation point for operational matters requiring resolution across the clusters. The role requires regular engagement with all clusters and travel between partner institutions to lead the integrated delivery of the cross-cluster programme.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

Cross-Cluster Project Leadership and Governance

• Lead the day-to-day planning, management and delivery of the cross-cluster programme, translating strategic priorities into an integrated project plan with defined milestones, deliverables, dependencies, responsibilities and performance measures.
• Design and manage a programme-level reporting framework for MRC, specifying the qualitative and quantitative information required from each cluster and ensuring the consistency, accuracy and timely submission of data.
• Lead the planning and operation of the Cross-Cluster Steering Committee, working with the Academic Lead and Deputy Lead to set agendas, commission papers, document decisions and allocate actions with clear owners and deadlines.
• Monitor delivery against agreed milestones and intervene where progress, quality or dependencies place programme objectives at risk.
• Develop and establish website to showcase the cluster capabilities.

Central Project Management and Stakeholder Leadership

• Act as the principle point of escalation for cross-cluster operational issues, resolving matters within delegated authority and escalating strategic, scientific or major resource decisions to the Academic Leads.
• Act as the authoritative programme contact for cluster leads, funders and external stakeholders, providing specialist advice on programme governance, reporting requirements, delivery processes and cross-cluster opportunities.
• Build and lead effective internal and external networks involving academic, industry, clinical, regulatory and third-sector stakeholders. Monitor expenditure against approved cross-cluster activity budgets, prepare forecasts, identify financial variances and provide recommendations to the Academic Leads, who will retain formal budgetary approval.
• There would be a requirement for semi-regular travel to Edinburgh

Translational and Industry Engagement

• Lead programme-level engagement with the Medicines Discovery Catapult and other external partners, using relevant industry and translational networks to identify and develop opportunities for collaboration, co-development, validation and adoption.
• Manage an opportunity pipeline, assess potential collaborations against programme priorities and make recommendations to the Academic Leads and Steering Committee.

Training, Events, and Community Building

• Lead a coherent programme of cross-cluster training activities (knowledge exchange activities), workshops, symposia, sandpits, and stakeholder-facing events throughout the UK.
• Ensure activities are strategically targeted, outcome-focused, and designed to catalyse follow-on collaboration and funding.
• Prepare high-level written outputs, including Steering Committee papers, funder reports, executive briefings, technical summaries, partnership proposals, presentations and an online presence including establishing a website for the In vitro disease model Cluster Network as well as setting up accounts on social media (e.g. Bluesky, Linkedin) and help to organise other public communication material.
