Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:
  • Support midwives to identify their own personal action for quality improvement.
  • The post holder will use their understanding of personal and professional resilience and support others to develop this attribute.
  • Ensure that there is a strong interface between the PMA and clinical governance at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Apply their expertise in midwifery to assist the Director, Deputy Directors of Midwifery, and Consultant Midwives with the implementation and oversight of midwifery practice, ensuring strong clinical governance assurance systems are established for midwifery activities.
  • Provide support to midwives in sharing of good practice learnt through the maternity services' internal risk management processes with the aim of reducing the incidence of harm and obstetric litigation cases.
  • Be involved in continuous monitoring and maintaining quality standards of clinical practice through a variety of ways for example audit.
  • Act as a role model at all times and promote a high standard of safe and effective care which is based upon best evidence.
  • Be accountable for monitoring and demonstrating the impact of the PMA and Listening Service through agreed metrics including uptake of restorative supervision, staff experience measures, retention, sickness absence, patient experience outcomes and quality improvement indicators

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with experience of practice in all areas
  • Completion of recognised Professional Midwifery Advocate training course
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of recent midwifery research and audit
  • IT skills, including report writing
  • Experience of working within a team and effective teamwork


Desirable criteria
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate Level 7 qualification
  • MSc in relevant subject
  • Experience of birth planning and/or those clients who are requesting care out of guidance
  • Experience of leading quality improvement programmes
  • Experience of leading workforce culture, staff wellbeing or psychological safety initiatives
