Job Title: National Major Trauma (TIG) Joint Committee on Surgical Training Fellowship Posts (10)
These posts are a continuation of the Trauma Interface Group (TIG) Fellowship schemes previously used to deliver advanced post-CCT/peri-CCT training. The posts are designed to develop expertise in the management of major trauma and span multiple surgical specialties.
This year the recruitment process across all centres will be coordinated by The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust.

There are 10 posts available, split across the 6 training centres (The Royal London Hospital St Mary's Hospital London, Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham, Leeds General Infirmary, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Northern General Hospital Sheffield.)

Main duties of the job

Details of the Fellowships
The fellowships are open to applicants that will be peri-certification of completion of surgical training. If applicants are pre-CCT the local TPD must provide written evidence of expectation to achieve competencies by the post start date. Candidates without CCT at the time of job start will not be able to take up These posts are most suited to those applicants within two years of the completion of surgical specialty training.
We are recruiting 10 fellows for posts starting on the 2nd December 2026 for a period of 12 months in training centres throughout England. The start date is deferrable by 6 months according to candidate circumstances (not extend beyond March 2028). The 12 month posts offer a year of intensive training and are suitable for candidates who have trained in Surgical specialties (General Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Vascular Surgery, ENT, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery and Urology) who have a demonstrable interest in Major Trauma Surgery. Candidates will be expected to develop an understanding of conflict injury and national preparedness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Within the fellowships there are two different pathways:

The Resuscitative Pathway: This will be most suitable to general and vascular surgeons and will enhance those technical skills required to save life in the early stages of the major trauma patients hospital management. An understanding of patterns of conflict wounds and sequelae of surgical care will balance resuscitative competencies.
The Major Trauma Pathway: This has been designed to develop the major trauma leader role, providing leadership in the care of the major trauma patient from the trauma room through to transfer to rehabilitation. This would be suitable for any surgeon wanting to develop their major trauma leadership skills, knowledge of national crisis response and interface with military repatriation in times of conflict.
Candidates will be appointed to a training pathway and centre based on personal preference and availability, depending upon ranking at interview.

Essential criteria

• Registered with the GMC with license to practice.
• Currently on the GMC Specialist Register.(or will be registered by start of fellowship)

Desirable criteria

• Within two years of completion of specialty training.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• A Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT); or
• A Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration Combined Programme [CESR(CP)]. (Or equivalent qualification that enables entry onto a specialist register)
• FRCS or equivalent relevant specialty qualification

Desirable criteria

• Higher degree (PhD, MD, MSc or equivalent relevant postgraduate qualification).

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

• Appropriate clinical experience continuing since completion of training.
• have trained in Surgical specialties (General Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Vascular Surgery, ENT, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery and Urology)
• Demonstrable interest in and commitment to a career involving major trauma care.
• Clear motivation to undertake and successfully complete the National Major Trauma TIG Fellowship.

Desirable criteria

• Previous relevant trauma-related exposure / experience.

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria

• Reference will be made to base specialty. Evidence of CCT and appropriate scope of practice.
• Demonstration of duties/responsibilities and practical application of relevant specialty

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Appropriate level of clinical knowledge. Evidence-informed practice.
• Awareness of own limitations.
• Evidence of attendance at relevant courses.
• Ability to develop an understanding of conflict injury and national preparedness.

Desirable criteria

• Demonstrates breadth of experience and awareness within and outside specialty.
• Attendance at recognised trauma-related or specialty-specific courses and conferences.

Organization & Planning

• Understanding of NHS clinical organization and planning.
