Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Capital Project Managers to join the team delivering the strategically important Newham Fire Safety Programme. Reporting to the Programme Manager, you will take responsibility for allocated capital projects from inception through design, procurement, construction, commissioning and completion, ensuring delivery safely, to programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.
You will lead multidisciplinary project teams and manage consultants, contractors and specialist advisors, working closely with clinical, Estates and Facilities teams and senior stakeholders. Responsibilities include developing project briefs and programmes, managing design, procurement, budgets, risk, change and contractual matters, and ensuring appropriate governance and assurance throughout the project lifecycle.
The role requires strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to manage complex interfaces and construction activity within a live acute hospital environment. You will ensure projects meet statutory, regulatory, fire safety and Trust requirements while maintaining patient safety and clinical service continuity.
This is an opportunity to deliver complex healthcare capital and fire remediation projects within a high-profile programme.

Main duties of the job

The Capital Project Manager will take responsibility for delivering allocated projects through the full lifecycle, from inception and design through procurement, construction, commissioning and completion. Key responsibilities include managing multidisciplinary design teams, consultants and contractors; developing and monitoring programmes; managing budgets, forecasting and change control; maintaining risk and issue registers; ensuring effective governance and assurance; and providing clear reports and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
We are looking for an experienced and confident project manager with a strong background in construction, engineering, estates or the built environment. You will have proven experience delivering complex capital projects to cost and programme, managing multidisciplinary teams and contractors, and working with standard forms of construction contract.
Key qualities include strong leadership, communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, resolve issues and make informed decisions. You will be organised, proactive and delivery-focused, able to manage competing priorities and operate effectively in a complex environment. Knowledge of statutory, regulatory, CDM and health and safety requirements is essential, with healthcare capital experience, particularly within a live acute hospital environment, desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A degree in construction, engineering, building surveying or other built environment specialism, such as building services
  • 5 years relevant professional experience of managing complex projects, coordinating stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams, applying appropriate governance and processes, and delivering projects to agreed objectives preferably within the construction industry.


Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of construction/built environment project implementation from both in-house design and project management of consultant design teams, including experience in conversion, refurbishment, and new build schemes
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary project management environment.


Skills

Essential criteria
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills, including proven report writing and presentation skills.


Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Detailed knowledge of statutory project requirements, including the CDM Regulations and other HSE directives.
