About the roleWe are looking for a Clinical Research Fellow to assist with running of multi-centre clinical trials, led by Professor Sudhin Thayyil in the Centre for Perinatal Neuroscience . The trials have a focus on hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, a birth related brain injury which impacts around three million babies every year, predominantly in low and middle-income countries.
What you would be doingAs the Clinical Research Fellow, you would be working primarily on the COMET (Cooling in Mild Encephalopathy) trial, involving 430 babies with mild encephalopathy from 40 NHS hospitals funded by NIHR HTA program.
You will lead the clinical aspects of the neuroprotection trials, gaining substantial clinical and research experience in all aspects of neonatal brain injury, including structured clinical neurological examination, neurodevelopmental follow-up assessment, cranial ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG), and conventional EEG acquisition and interpretation
You will also have the opportunity to work with our Artificial Intelligence group to apply machine learning teqniques to clinical, MRI and EEG data.
What we are looking for - You should have a degree in Medicine (MBBS). A BSc or other equivalent qualification is desirable, but not essential
- GMC registration
- You should have experience of research governance and engaging in sensitive communication with families
- Experience in neonatal imaging and EEG, alongside working in intensive care, is desirable, but not essential.

Further informationThis is a part-time (minimum 1 to 2 days a week) post, fixed for one year. We have scope to appoint more than one individual.
These posts may be suitable either if you are a resident doctor in a run-through training programme (or FY3 doctors) undertaking your first paediatric or obstetric placement and wishing to combine clinical training with research experience, with the potential to pursue a PhD later. It is also suitable for more experienced neonatal GRID trainees or Obstetric/Fetal medicine trainees, if you are seeking a senior role in neonatal brain research within a world-leading research programme.
You based at Imperial's Hammersmith Campus in East Acton. Please note that this is an office-based post, but it may require travelling within the UK and the opportunity to visit overseas trial sites.
