Job Title: Motorcycle Technician - Level 4, Fleet Services

Salary: The starting salary is £46,985, which includes allowances totalling £3,009.

The salary is broken down as £43,976 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £49,670. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The police vehicle fleet is an important physical asset. It enables officers and staff to do their job, carries key equipment required, and provides safe transportation for the public / prisoners.

The complex needs of modern policing requires a wide range of vehicle types. We operate a fleet of over 5,200 assets on the road and river, as well as over 1,000 pedal cycles. London is the most complex and diverse city in the UK, and our fleet is reflective of that. We currently have over 220 different types of vehicles supporting all operational commands including armed response vehicles, HGVs, patrol cars, motorbikes and pedal cycles.

Customers can be broadly grouped into three strategic pillars - Frontline Policing, Met Ops & Performance, and Counter Terrorism / Specialist Operations. Collectively this covers pan London requirements as well as national CT responsibilities.

The overall fleet requirements and volumes are owned and governed by operational leaders at the Strategic Fleet Board. Operational teams are accountable for the volume of fleet required to undertake their roles, and Fleet Services support and enable effective decision making through provision of information and technical / industry knowledge.

Key responsibilities:

• Motorcycle maintenance and repair - Maintain fleet within Fleet Services' workshop by providing efficient scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on the motorcycle fleet. Reduce motorcycle maintenance costs and maximise fleet availability by ensuring repairs on the motorcycle fleet are timely and necessary. Follow multiple manufacturers' repair instructions, specific methods and techniques. Accurately determine the serviceability of all motorcycle components, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic; using industry recognised tools and equipment.
• Warranty jobs - Accurately follow the 'end to end' process for each manufacturer's warranty process. Follow multiple manufacturers' repair instructions, specific methods and techniques.
• Inspection and diagnosis - Visually inspect and road test motorcycles, interpreting feedback from the motorcycles correct function. Diagnose electrical faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical test equipment to ensure they achieve minimum (or exceed) motorcycles manufacturers' standards. Maintain high technology diagnostic test equipment to configure / reconfigure the appropriate system correctly in line with the manufacturers system updates and device firmware configurations.
• Data / Information - Accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary. Read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturers' diagnostic equipment and web-based mediums.
• Development / training - Take responsibility for personal development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation.
• Support colleagues - Continuously understand wider Met activity and decision making to assess potential impact on local delivery. Support the Technical Supervisors to maintain the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Demonstrate the skills and ability to effectively communicate with internal staff (at all levels), customers and industry organisations to transfer both technical and non-technical information. Provide training and mentor others (apprentices / technicians) in the workplace to support personal development and raise overall standards and efficiency.

Knowledge

• Fleet Services - Understands how fleet services work
• Health & Safety - Must have a good working knowledge of Health and Safety, Risk Assessments and COSHH regulations in Motor Vehicle Repair and Associated Industries (HSG261)
• Police conversions / equipment - Knowledge of specific motorcycle conversions and unique specialist on board equipment. Knowledge of additional Police warning and communication systems, high technology surveillance with the ability to demonstrate diagnostic competency with complex faults
• Examination processes - Must have an in-depth knowledge of motorcycle examination processes for maintenance and repair in line with Police policy and Driver Vehicle Standards Agency. Knowledge of the High Technology tools required for interrogating motorcycle systems
• Repair and maintenance - Must have an in depth knowledge of all motorcycle platforms and operating systems, Inc. mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems. Knowledge of all maintenance and repair procedures, the measured tools and calculations required to make professional decisions on serviceability of all safety related items.
• Workshop tools and equipment - Knowledge of all workshop tools, machinery and equipment, and a full understanding of its indented use and calibration requirements
• Warranty - Knowledge of all motorcycle manufactures warranty processes and diagnostic reporting.
• Supporting colleagues - The knowledge and ability to provide instructional support to technical and non-technical colleagues in order to coach and support individuals with advanced diagnostic techniques and development.

Skills

• Serviceability - Must be able to accurately determine the serviceability of all motorcycle components, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic, using industry recognised tools and equipment.
• Visual inspection - Must have the ability visually inspect and road test motorcycles, interpreting feedback from the motorcycles correct function.
• Electrical faults - Must possess the ability to diagnose electrical faults accurately, using High and Low technology electrical test equipment, to the same standard or exceed that of the motorcycle manufactures.
• Diagnosis - Must have the knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair HV systems to an equivalent of IMI level 3.
• Warranty / repair instructions - Must have the ability to accurately follow the 'end to end' process for each manufactures warranty process. Must have the ability to interpret and follow multiple manufactures repair instructions, following specific methods and techniques
• Maintain / configure equipment - Must have the ability to maintain High Technology test equipment, to configure/reconfigure the appropriate system correctly. Including CAN, LIN, on board LTE, WiFi and Bluetooth connected devices.
• Data / information - Must have the ability to accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary. Ability to read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturers' diagnostic equipment and web based mediums
• Communication - Advanced level of communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with staff and officers of all levels, along with the ability to work as part of a team.

Experience

• Industry experience - At least 4 years' relevant experience within the motorcycle repair industry.
• Manufacturers - Working with a wide range of manufacturers. (desirable)
• CPD - Evidence of continued Continuing Professional Development (CPD) internal or external to manufacturers training programs.
• Certifications - NVQ Level 3 in Motorcycle Maintenance and repair or equivalent. IMI ATA Level 4 Advanced Motorcycle Accreditation or equivalent. DVSA Nominated Tester. (desirable)
• Licences - DVLA licence with Category A. DVLA licence with B, C1 & D1 / C or C+E driving categories. (desirable)
