Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

The post-holder will participate actively in research relevant to paediatric intensive care including the development and delivery of studies within the directorate.

There will be opportunities to act as Principal Investigator for NIHR portfolio studies and to support a research-active culture within the service.

The role also includes participation in audit and quality improvement activities, and contributing to the development of teaching and research in collaboration with the University of Leicester. The post-holder is expected to fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health CPD scheme (or equivalent), with CPD supported within the job plan and mandatory attendance at audit and governance meetings.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • MRCPCH/MRCP/FRCA or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • On GMC Specialist Register for base specialty at the time of application or within 6 months of obtaining CCT for UK RCPCH trainee or on the GMC specialist register for PICM at the time of application (if CESR/portfolio) pathway


Desirable criteria
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Higher degree e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.


Knowledge and Experience in Subspecialty

Essential criteria
  • Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum and 2 years training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved centre rotation in paediatric intensive care medicine plus a minimum of six months of anaesthetic training • OR equivalent training programme with evidence that this training has been completed and signed off
  • Extensive experience in management of cardiac patients including post op cardiac surgical patients
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence-based practice
  • Undertake basic and advanced intensive care procedures
  • Advanced Paediatric Life support provider or equivalent


Desirable criteria
  • Experience in caring for children on ECLS
  • Experienced in or have had training in the provision of palliative care in children
  • Experience in managing complex long-term patients
  • Expertise in use of POCUS, Echocardiogram or similar advanced technologies in paediatric critical care
  • Experience managing level 2 paediatric critical care patients in HDU or equivalent


Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • To be empathic and sensitive; capacity to take others perspectives and treat others with understanding.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Highly developed Emotional Intelligence


Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable track record of successful change management


Audit/Quality Improvement

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Clinical audit and maintenance of high quality of care
  • Understanding of and participation in national audits such as PICANET and National Congenital Heart Disease Audit
  • Experience in quality and safety review eg: mortality review , review of critical incidents


Desirable criteria
  • Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience in training others in audit/QI activity
  • Experience in complaint investigations and PSIRF training


Management and leadership

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors
  • Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles Personal integrity and reliability.
  • Ability to motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff


Desirable criteria
  • Experience or training in medical management and or clinical leadership
  • Awareness of Service Development issues.
  • Certification in Medical Leadership
  • Commitment to further develop the post and the service provided


Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.
  • Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS.
  • Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills)

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
