Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a 12 month fixed term locum post, based on the Luton and Dunstable site within Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Chemical Pathology (clinical biochemistry) service is split across both sites. The post holder will join two Consultant Chemical Pathologists, one Consultant Clinical Scientist, one specialty Dr and four Principal Clinical Scientists and one Senior Clinical Scientist to provide a comprehensive biochemistry service.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification FRCPath


Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research / publications


Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)


Desirable criteria
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR portfolio pathway


Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent all round experience of chemical Pathology ± metabolic medicine including lipid disorders
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Chemical Pathology ± metabolic medicine
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.


Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.


Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD
  • Experience of guideline appraisal
  • Participation in relevant local audits
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research


Desirable criteria
  • Participation in relevant national audits


Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students


Desirable criteria
  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course


Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to co-operate in a democratic team environment
  • Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills
  • Leadership Skills


Personal Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance
