Job summary

Ward 14 is seeking an enthusiastic band 6 who is passionateabout leadership and ensuring both the staff and the patients have the bestexperience.

Ward 14 is currently a Pathway Discharge Unit (PDU) wherepatients are moved to once medically fit but need ongoing care. You will workclosely with the patients, family and MDT to ensure that the patient has theright support on discharge.

Ward 14 sits under the surgical division and will return tosurgical patients as part of the future trust plan.

Main duties of the job

Work closely with the MDT to ensure patientshave a safe discharge.

Carry out staff Personal Development Reviews,Return to Works, and Wellbeing meetings.

Assist/attend ward manager in meetings, audits,investigations and quality improvement plans and ideas.

Take charge in the day to day running of theward.

Establish and maintain effective communication and foster good working relationships with all multidisciplinary teams, both internal and external.

Provide and receive complex and / or sensitive information from patients and staff. For example, breaking bad news to patients, giving complex information about procedures and their outcomes, dealing with performance issues, holding staff meetings. Able to support and talk to distressed patients, visitors, and staff members.

Responsible for cascading information to ward staff and chairing staff meetings from which minutes are provided.

Make use of electronic internal / external mail and Internet systems as appropriate and necessary.

Deal effectively with comments, complaints, or incidents that affect staff and users of the ward in accordance with complaints, risk management, or human resources procedures.

Bring to the attention of the Senior Sister/Charge any factors which may adversely affect patient care or service provision.

Report all serious incidents to the appropriate Manager / Director within 24 hours; these include Never Events, serious falls, and grade 3 or 4 pressure ulcers.

  • Experience at Band 5 within the speciality or related field.
  • Ward / Departmental management experience at Band 5 or above.
  • Ward / Department based teaching.
  • Managing clinical risk and incidents at Ward / Department level.
Desirable

  • Clinical audit activity.
  • Risk assessment.
  • Staff appraisals and PDP formation.
  • Sickness absence / performance management.
  • Complaints handling.
  • Using Essence of Care standards.
Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN with current registration.
  • Evidence of Continuing. Professional Development
  • Evidence of management experience / training.
  • Post registration qualification or experience in the specialty.
  • NMC recognised teaching and assessing qualification.
Desirable

  • First level degree.
Knowledge and Skills

  • Evidence of being up to date with current NHS / professional issues.
  • Experience and knowledge within the speciality or related field.
  • Clinical credible.
  • Evidence of teaching and development skills.

  • Awareness of health and safety issues and management of them.
  • Able to prioritise.
