About the roleThe Julia Anderson Training Programme provides early-career professionals with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by contributing to a variety of projects and initiatives led by the Institute of Global Health Innovation (IGHI), supporting their professional development and career progression.
Please read the full eligibility criteria before applying. This programme is designed for individuals with little or no professional experience. To be eligible, applicants must have less than two months' full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience in health, science, medicine, technology, business management, or any office-based role. Applicants must also have the right to work in the UK and must not have completed paid or unpaid internships totalling two months or more.
The programme runs from 3 February 2027 to 27 April 2027. These dates are fixed and cannot be changed.
Are you interested in gaining experience in public engagement and science communication? Would you like to make a meaningful impact against a growing global health threat? We are looking for a Public Engagement Trainee to work with the Fleming Initiative's Public Engagement and Involvement team. Working with an experienced team you will get the opportunity to develop a variety of public engagement skills across science communication, exhibitions, and social media.
What you would be doingWe are a diverse team who are passionate about engaging with the public to create meaningful, inclusive experiences through exhibitions, events, and social media.
In this role you will gain an understanding of how to communicate complex scientific concepts, from digital media such as films and games to writing blogs for the website. By building your research skills you will be actively contributing to the creation of content for the exhibition and social media channels. Through working with the young people in our Youth Panel you will develop skills for effective public engagement and understand the importance of involving members of the public in our work.
Alongside the core team you will have the opportunity to work with a range of creative consultants including exhibition designers, game designers, film makers, and audience evaluation specialists.
What we are looking for - This role will be within a fast-paced team with set deadlines to enable delivery of the Fleming Initiative's ambitions, particularly around the development of the Fleming Centre exhibition. You will need to be collaborative and flexible.
- You do not need to have any prior experience or existing knowledge of science, AMR or communications and engagement for this role. However, an interest in any of these areas would be beneficial.
- As the role will include researching content for the exhibition some confidence summarising scientific material, and in using Microsoft Word, Copilot, and other Microsoft Office suite software (or similar) would be beneficial.
