About the team?

The GWR IT Network team is a part of the GWR IT team who technically manage the IT systems and client devices at GWR. We manage the data network to ensure that all aspects of the business can function and serve our customers, this ranges from Ticket Vending Machines to the back office functions. The network is comprised of Juniper firewalls and switches, which are managed by a support partner. We also have an internal CIS network that uses primarily Cisco Switches.

About the role?

To support the IT Network Manager in ensuring all network solutions are delivered and supported to the highest standards. To provide specialist support across LAN, WAN and wifi working closely with the IT Service Delivery team, transferring knowledge whenever possible. To work collaboratively with FirstGroup, third parties and the rest of the IT team on any network related developments/projects

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • To support, maintain and improve the corporate network at GWR, including wifi
  • To provide technical assistance in the delivery of any projects with a network component.
  • To create network designs, diagrams, configurations and implementation plans
  • To manage work packages as part of the LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi and Station projects
  • To assist in the handover of services in to support and improve the customer service.
  • To attend GWR locations to perform physical surveys and implement new services.
  • To assist in the delivery of security-based solutions
  • To contribute to the IT Team in identifying new and innovative technical solutions
  • To provide specialist 3rd line support for network related tickets raised via the incident management system.

About You?

  • Currently working in a network support role.
  • Good understanding of all networking concepts including LAN, WAN and Firewalls.
  • Experience of Cloud networking would be beneficial.
  • Proven experience in a network support role for a medium to large network.
  • Be comfortable with performing all aspects of networking including physical patching and network kit installation.
  • Ability to fault find in a methodical way to ensure faults are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Be flexible in terms of working hours and locations.
  • Be comfortable communicating with both internal IT resource and customers.

About the location?

We are based in the GWR HQ in Milford House in Swindon although occasional travel throughout the GWR area may be required at times.

Working Pattern?

9 to 5 standard working day.
