Job description

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor (OVC) is based at our Colchester campus.

Members of the University's senior management team are based in the OVC, including the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Chief Operating Officer, University Secretary, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors for Research and Education.

The OVC is also home to four small teams who provide dedicated support to the University's management and governance functions. These teams:
  • manage the University's information assurance functions;
  • support Council and its committees;
  • provide high-level PA support for the OVC's senior management team; and
  • manage the University's safeguarding, equity and accessibility functions.

Duties of the Role

The Information Assurance Manager works as the University's lead professional on information assurance and data compliance. The postholder leads development work on information assurance, including ensuring that the University follows a methodical risk-based approach to compliance with relevant legislation and regulation, and promoting and supporting best practice in information stewardship. The Information Assurance Manager also holds the role of the University's Data Protection Officer.

Skills and qualifications required

The successful candidate will be qualified to degree or equivalent standard, with a relevant qualification or demonstrable evidence of deep experience in and understanding of data protection. They will have extensive knowledge as well as experience of the application of the relevant data protection legislation, the application of the Freedom of Information Act for public authorities, information security standards, and ICO guidance. They will also be experienced in delivering engaging training sessions to groups and individuals and be familiar with working with contracts, sharing agreements and other tools for governing data sharing. They will need to demonstrate experience of acting independently to meet the objectives of a regulatory framework, as well as strong and effective communication skills and attention to detail.
