About Jacobs Nuclear & PPP:

Jacobs Nuclear is the Design and Engineering partner for Sellafield under the PPP (Programme and Project Partners). This is 20-year arrangement to deliver ~£7bn of major projects. We are identifying our best people to deliver this programme.

Sellafield are looking to adopt high value experience from across comparable highly complex regulated sectors and want to transform project delivery across its estate. Working in a fully collaborative environment, there are three core parts of the PPP scope: delivery of major projects, site-wide project delivery improvements and provision of supporting PPP services . Wood Nuclear provide the front-end design and engineering capability and services required to deliver major projects and site wide project delivery improvements. The programme will deliver innovation in solutions and schedule underpinning the decommissioning plan for the site.

Being part of the PPP Team offers a unique opportunity to be part of a team driving change and innovation in design and execution of engineering, safety and delivery solutions in one of the most complex industrial sites in the UK if not the world.

As a result of increasing demand for our services, there are significant opportunities for you, as a Human Factors Consultant to support a key project within the nuclear business.

We are recruiting a Human Factors Assessor to join the team in Birchwood. Human Factors design and safety case support to the High Active (HA) work stream (plus ad hoc support to other RAP streams as required). RAP is currently in the Preliminary Design Phase. The HF resource will need to be fully embedded / integrated with the RAP Project, in particular the design / engineering, pre-ops and safety disciplines.

The key HF activities planned for the Preliminary Design Phase include:

  • Project planning / management, for example:
  • Management of live HF scope and strategy document
  • HF planning / scoping activities for subsequent project phases
  • Logging, tracking and closing off HF issues, actions and requirements.

HF design support, for example:

  • Input to / justification of Allocation of Function decisions (particularly with respect to human physical and psychological capabilities)
  • OPEX / LFE reviews
  • Understanding the role of the operator
  • task analysis on key functions/tasks to inform design development, HF requirements capture and HF design advice
  • Providing ergonomic design advice / review to aspects such as HMI, anthropometric assessment, glovebox design, maintenance tasks, access / egress, workspace layout, etc.
  • Input into the development of an operational philosophy
  • Input into optioneering / design of analytical techniques and proposed technologies.

HF safety case support, for example:

  • Input into the nuclear safety case strategy, utilising SL HF methodologies
  • Attendance at HAZOPs and input into fault identification
  • Input into allocation of safety function to operational controls
  • Input into the development of radiological, criticality and chemotoxic design safety assessments
  • High-level HF substantiation of safety significant tasks / operator claims.
  • HF support will also be required throughout the remaining project lifecycle, to ensure that the operator role is adequate and that the design outcome meets the user needs, accommodates for human psychological and physical characteristics and minimises the potential for human error and violations.
  • Senior HF Assessor
  • Significant HF experience
  • Significant experience providing integrated HF design and safety case support in the nuclear industry
  • Sellafield experience would be an advantage
  • Significant knowledge and experience working within the UK nuclear regulatory framework
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of integrated team
