Job overview

To work in a Pelvic Health Musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy department,
maternity units and gynaecology department treating acute, sub-acute and chronic
pathologies.
•
To act as a specialist resource for physiotherapy staff and other health care
professionals.
• To take a lead role in providing Pelvic Health physiotherapy care, including the
advanced assessment and treatment of patients who have diverse presentation and can
be highly complex. To work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide
clinical diagnosis, and as an autonomous practitioner plan and perform appropriate
treatment and maintain records and ensure others do the same. To assess to a high
level and be able to treat and provide advice on cases.
• To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using
specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience to treat
complex or highly complex patients.

Main duties of the job

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively highly complex information with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes, and to ensure an understanding of their condition/problem so that patients are supported in self-management of their condition. Communication of
patient progress and forward planning may be discussed with family members and carers where appropriate.
• To use the communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation and obtaining informed consent will be used with a wide variety of patients. Issues may include bereavement, grieving, loss of independence and prognosis, and must be dealt with empathetically and confidentially. Barriers to effective communication will regularly be
evident including: cognitive impairment, expressive and receptive communication difficulties, embarrassment, anxiety, pain, fear and visual/hearing impairment. When a barrier is identified strategies to overcome it will be put into place.
• To use communication skills to address language and cultural diversity issues.
• To communicate complex patient related information effectively, to ensure collaborative working with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) members across health and social care sectors ensuring the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.

Experience

Essential criteria

• Suitable postgraduate experience as a senior physiotherapist in relevant MSK/Women's health/Pelvic health outpatient settings
• Experience of working with Maternity/Obstetric, Gynaecology and Urology patients.
• Documented evidence of CPD, in accordance with HCPC recommendations.
• Experience of working as part of a team uni professional and multi- professional team.
• Experience of audit/research.

Desirable criteria

• Member of specific interest group specialising in Women's Health

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Good knowledge of current best practice in physiotherapy in the relevant setting E.G. MSK/pain/maternity/obstetric/urology/gynaecology
• Specialist MSK skills in OPD/Maternity/Obstetric/Urology areas.
• Understanding and application of risk management.
• Understand legal responsibilities of the profession and the associated code of ethics.
• Demonstrate understanding and previous participation in activity to support the clinical governance agenda.
• In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to client group.

Skills

Essential criteria

• Ability to organise and prioritise own and more junior staff workload and supervise support staff in this field.
• Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities and support other staff in this field and delegate.
• Ability to demonstrate flexibility and reliability.
• Ability to deliver training both internally within the profession and externally to other staff groups.
• Ability to apply current best practice in physiotherapy in acute physical, community and rehab settings.
