Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologist (Band 7)

Are you an ambitious and experienced Cardiac Physiologist looking to advance your career within a nationally recognised cardiology service? We are seeking enthusiastic Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologists to join our dedicated and supportive team based at the renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC).

Working across both tertiary and secondary care services, you will play a key role in delivering exceptional diagnostic and cardiac investigations to patients across the Basildon site. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate specialist expertise in an advanced area of practice, such as Cardiac Rhythm Management or Complex Echocardiography, alongside a strong foundation in performing and reporting routine cardiac investigations.

Main duties of the job

Apply highly specialist clinical knowledge and expertise to perform, interpret and report on a wide range of diagnostic investigations and procedures to an advanced professional standard.

Work autonomously within professional guidelines, exercising clinical judgement and seeking advice from senior colleagues when appropriate.

Lead within the specialist service area to maintain high clinical standards, service quality and operational efficiency.

Oversee the day-to-day delivery of services, ensuring the safe, effective and timely provision of patient care.

Monitor and maintain compliance with clinical governance, health and safety requirements, professional standards and departmental policies.

Identify, escalate and help resolve operational, clinical or service concerns to support continuous improvement and patient safety.

Provide supervision, mentorship and teaching to staff and learners, supporting ongoing professional development and competency assessment.

Contribute to workforce management activities, including appraisals, recruitment, performance management and the development of an effective and high-performing team.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• BSc in Cardiac Physiology or equivalent qualification with relevant experience
• Post graduate MSc level qualification (eg BHRS, IBHRE/ BSE accreditation)

Desirable criteria

• Management or leadership qualification
• Teaching / assessor qualification

Clinical skills and experience

Essential criteria

• Highly specialist knowledge and skills in advanced physiology practice underpinned by academic study and practical experience in a minimum Band 6 NHS role
• Device specialty - Ability to independently undertake Pacemaker, ICD and CRT follow-up and to support pacemaker, ICD and CRT Implants. Experience, familiarity, and ability to carry out remote Pacemaker and ICD follow-up
• Echo specialty - Ability to independently undertake and report on standard transthoracic TTEs and to support complex echo procedures such as TOE, Stress echo, 3D echo
• Able to carry out audits relating to quality standards / operational efficiency.

Desirable criteria

• Practical experience in interventional cath labs
• Practical experience in Electrophysiology lab procedures
• Practical experience in GUCH or TAVI services.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Awareness and understanding of current professional and service priorities, challenges and opportunities.
• Evidence of maintaining own up to date knowledge of speciality inc CPD and own research.
• Understanding of quality and governance standards and measures pertaining to specialty

Communication

Essential criteria

• Able to communicate considerately and with sensitivity with staff and service users
• Conscientious approach and attention to detail in all written communications.
• Able to communicate complex and / or sensitive information both clinical, service and personnel related

People skills

Essential criteria

• Able to lead and sustain a positive approach to change within teams

Desirable criteria

• Experience in carrying out performance management tasks - eg appraisals, sickness absence returns
• Experience of teaching, supervising and assessing competency of Physiologists and other staff groups

Personal skills / attributes

Essential criteria

• Able to act as day to day operational lead, including prioritisation of work, taking initiative, making decisions and escalating concerns
• Ability to work under pressure and support others in an emotive environment.
