Job description

Part Time / 18.5 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term for 12 months due to funding

All maintained schools report to a governing board, the governing board acts as the school's critical friend and makes strategic decisions that ensure the school is well led, financially stable, legally compliant and focused on delivering the best outcomes for pupils. All governing boards are supported by a governance professional who will ensure that schools meet their statutory duties.

The Governor Services team offers this support many schools across Leicester City, whilst also providing professional advice and guidance to governing boards, headteachers and schools.

The role of the Governor Support Officer is instrumental in guiding supporting governing boards and ensuring that they meet their statutory duties.

Training that is Accredited by the Chartered Governance Institute is available.

What you'll be doing

As a governance professional, administrative and professional clerking support to schools and provide efficient governance advice governing boards to ensure statutory duties are met. You will plan, prepare and organise meetings and hearings ensuring governors receive the information they need in a timely manner to allow the board to make effective use of their time and focus on strategic matters.

You will be able to work under your own initiative, manage deadlines and be responsible for maintaining comprehensive governing board records, including governing board minutes and reports and full governing board membership and training records in accordance with data protection, freedom of information and school governance regulations with the ability to remain impartial and respect confidentiality at all times.

You will work closely with a number of schools and establish strong working relationships with the Chair of the Board, the Headteacher and the Board members of your assigned schools, your aim being to establish a relationship based on mutual respect and trust.

Working with governing boards may require attendance at meetings that are out of the normal office hours and therefore you will be given the flexibility to complete your hours in order to meet the demand of the governing board. You will have the flexibility of hybrid working in order to support you in managing your workloads.

What you'll need
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills in order to meet all statutory and SLA timescales
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to be able to deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature
  • The ability to work as part of a team as well as alone and with minimum supervision
  • The ability to work flexibly
  • Able to undertake training for the role
  • Ability to demonstrate our values and behaviours
  • Professional credibility through proven relevant experience (not essential)
