Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The on-call commitment at Luton will be on a 5 day week (08:00-17:00) 1 in 7 Rota, with prospective cover for annual and study leave. Including one night per week (non-resident),1 in 7 weekend covering 48 hours.

All non-elective admissions are initially the responsibility of the on call consultant, with ongoing care handed over to the receiving consultant at the end of the hot week.

The department has weekly MDT team meetings and in-house teaching and also has a department quality and safety meeting once a month, with case presentations, discussion and learning objectives met. The appointee is expected to lead the teaching and training schedules for the junior doctors.

The appointee should have 12 months NHS experience and a minimum of 2 years training in Urology.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Medical Degree
• Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at point of application
• The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2014)
• Relevant postgraduate qualification in Urology
• At least 2 years of NHS work experience at registrar level

Desirable criteria

• FRCS (Urol/FEBU) or equivalent
• Additional relevant endoscopic clinical experience
• Entry in the UK specialist register

Experience

Essential criteria

• Completion of Foundation Competencies
• Completion of a Core Surgical Training Programme or equivalent
• Able to deal with general emergency admissions
• Logbook indicating validated experience of appropriate range and number of clinical procedures
• Evidence of completion of Core Training (CT1/ST1) competencies or equivalent relevant to General Surgery, and projected completion of CT2/ST2 competencies or equivalent relevant to general surgery by time of appointment.
• Excellent all round experience of DGH work
• Minimum of 3 years' experience in Urology

Desirable criteria

• ALS Experience
• Experience of Laparoscopic Surgery

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Relevant specialty clinical knowledge
• Clinical training and experience in urology, including four years full-time postgraduate training and at least two of which should be in a specialty training programme.
• Ability to lead a team of junior doctors.
• Commitment to clinical governance improving quality of patient care

Desirable criteria

• Teaching: evidence of experience in teaching where required in the job.
• Demonstrates understanding of the principles of research, evidence of relevant academic and research achievements.
