Do you have what it takes to join the UK's leading in-house police legal team?
The Metropolitan Police Service is proud of the role it plays in policing London, a diverse and vibrant capital city with a growing population. The Met is anchored in the communities it serves but with national and international reach. We are looking for an able and committed employment lawyer to help us achieve our aims. The team
Working in a growing team of close to 150, we are the largest in house police legal directorate in the country. Alongside around 60 qualified lawyers and with the support of paralegals and administrative colleagues, you will provide high quality legal services to more than 40,000 officers and staff.
The Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) provides legal advice to the Commissioner and represents her in courts, tribunals and several high profile public inquiries. DLS advises on a range of matters including high profile investigations, civil litigation (including malfeasance and personal injury), regulatory work including police officer misconduct, public law challenges, inquests and inquiries, employment law, discrimination, information law, commercial and procurement law, family law and operational policing matters including advice on counter-terrorism. The team ensures the cost effective provision of all legal services to the Met, the largest police service in the UK and one of the most trusted in the world. The role
As a lawyer within our employment team, you'll need to analyse information critically, provide effective written and oral advice, organise a complex workload and work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues and other stakeholders in a publicly accountable environment. Your workload will include complex discrimination and whistleblowing employment tribunal litigation as well as providing advice on various employment related matters. It's more important that you have the aptitude, ambition and potential to thrive in this environment rather than any particular previous experience of policing. The candidate
We are looking for able lawyers with a "can-do" attitude who enjoy a fast paced environment and working as part of a team. With an ability to carry a varied and heavy caseload you will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer in England and Wales who has completed a training contract, pupillage (or has been exempted from this by the Law Society or Bar Council) or has qualified through the CILEx route.
We would welcome applications from suitably experienced employment lawyers with knowledge of employment tribunal work
Being highly organised, working with minimum supervision and the ability to meet tight deadlines are crucial for this role. You should also bring sound judgement and analytical skills.
In return you can expect a rewarding career in the country's biggest in-house police team. The Met recognises the importance of work/life balance and offers a range of attractive benefits plus a friendly and supportive work environment.
To apply you will be required to submit a detailed CV and a personal statement outlining your suitability for the role (no more than 500 words). You must include details of your SRA number and the date you were admitted to the Law Society or Bar membership number, Year of Call or membership number, and date granted Fellowship of CILEx, as appropriate.
